This style rig is quite the rage in Indiana right now, especially in dept.s that ran a truck and a squad. They are combining them into a straight truck with lots of heavy rescue gear in addition to their firefighting tools. You can see the trend at Indianafiretrucks.com

Harry– It is a lot about cost these days. I have to agree with a bunch of the other comments. A lot of the departments, in DuPage County (where I used to live up until two years ago) are doing just that. Bloomingdale, Wheaton & West Chicago were/are prime examples of this. If/when their tower ladders were out of service, there would be an engine running in their place at that station. I believe Carol Stream is the only area department that still has a front-line & a reserve tower.
I will give you one more example, from where I am now in the SW Burbs. One of the departments, that borders mine, has been without their quint for quite a while due to an accident; the only other suppression rig they have is an engine, so that is what they are running.
You have to go with what you got.

when i was at tower 14 the engine was out for a while getting a spare engine and they said at the time the next closest engine was engine 91 which is not too far away but minutes count and the guys at twr 14 that day said the trucks and towers should have water tanks too
or like franklin pk they have 2 engines and 1 quint and if the truck had no water tank right now fp would only have 1 engine because e1 has been out a while

Harry, it worked for them before they restructured. When it was purchased, it was at their Station 1 with an engine. At that point, it worked for them, I believe that it was spec’d as is because it took the place of their old truck and a squad. They restructured and as Andy said, they are only running one truck. You may say it is useless, but departments buy apparatus that work for them…

well it is 14 years old no pump or tank equals useless why any dept would buy a rig without a water tank

They stopped running two trucks several years ago, it had been a reserve but they are choosing to sell it now.

The current trend in Dupage is not to have a reserve truck. Run an engine in it’s place and use auto aid for a truck when it is down, comes down to maintenance costs and money savings.
