Firefighters are assigned to the boat. When I was a reliever in the 1st district, I was detailed there for 8 months one time. Engine 2 does have ice breaking capability. Usually during the winter months the water department boat Versulus would come by and break the ice by the marine safety station. I was told by one of the pilots the fire boat is the only responder on the lake when it freezes other than the coast guard. Off topic we were responding to a jumper off the skyway bridge and it was surreal being the only boat out there in February

Are the firefighters assigned to the boat have any other duties besides the boat?
What do they do when the lake and river freezes over?
