I served on the spec committee for Engine 22. We had two main objectives… 1. Design an engine that is functional, user friendly and gain more room in the cab and 2. Bring back tradition to our rigs. This rig has been well received by our membership and is a rig that we are very proud of. We accomplished what we set out to do. Thanks to John Kenna and Pierce for building us a fantastic rig we are proud of.

Harry a department dropping 1600 on a new bell isn’t missing out in manpower because of that expense. Also things like bells are sometimes moved from an old rig to a new one so it might not even cost them that. Pride is important, as long as it’s not legitimately at the expense of things that matter. Bells are not impeding a department’s ability to staff rigs.

Harry,
Bells do have a purposeful function as well as tradition. Evanston has a very large downtown area as well as a college campus. I could see using the bell as a very effective means of alerting pedestrians and bicyclists without scaring the heck out of them. As far as costs go, skipping the bell to hire a new firefighter has no merit! You would need to purchase roughly 100 bells!!! A lot of towns have bells and other traditional accessories thanks to donations from the community.

tom and others as with the 888 light or even green they have a purpose however a bell is mostly used at parades funerals maybe but rarely on a call so to spend 800-1600 for a bell is not good money management

Gotta have pride in your stuff. Something that lacks in the fire service. Throwing a bell or a 888 light shows class and that the guys care. If it makes your rig unique all for it.

Guess they got rid of the blue lights on this

I like the mars 888 light. I don’t care what it costs, I just like it.

looks nice to me the bell is a needless expense i would much rather spend the money on stuff that matters like gear airpaks new hire or more new vehicles
