Benjamin Zink:
” Does anyone have any more information like dates they were in service or out of that location.”
Squad 1 was located with Engine 13 from August 1931 to May 1961

I restore old axes and a couple of years ago I restored an old Kelly Standard fire axe. This axe was very large and had markings etched into the head. I notified the Chicago Fire Museum and sent photos. They said it was from Squad#1 Axe#8 Engine Co#13 from 219 North Dearborn St. Does anyone have any more information like dates they were in service or out of that location. Im trying to age the axe. It also has the original handle as well. I purchased in very rough shape from a “picker” in the Chicago area.

Those four International/Darley units were part of the five original fog pressure rigs that the CFD purchased. Two of them were the first ‘A’ units assigned to Snorkel Squads 1 and 2 until 1964 when they were replaced by newer units with longer bodies specifically intended for the Snorkel squads. Then the Darleys were reassigned as regular fog pressure companies. The original fog pressure apparatus delivered before the International Darleys were on Willies Jeeps. These were white over red and labelled from the John Bean company. That one shouldn’t be confused with Jeep Pressure Wagon 1 which was also on a Willies Jeep. It was small deluge wagon used to attack fires in tight settings and sometimes in garages.

I remember as a kid a Fog Pressure rig running out of Engine 80 for car fires on the expressway. How things have changed.

Interesting MACK. That was before enclosed cabs were widely accepted let alone standard.
