Sure Tc. First of all their residential population doesn’t exceed 170,000. The biggest problem I see with their stations is out south with 10,6,5, and 8.
You have 3 neighboring still districts that are barely doing a handful of calls a day. Most of station 5’s area is a forest preserve, 6 and 10 are a mile and a half apart. And if you wanted to go a step farther, there is tons of coverage overlap (through out the entire city). 9 and 7 are too close together but there’s railroad tracks involved.
We can discuss for days consolidating firehouses and relocating firehouses. IMHO 6 and 10 should consolidate and 5 and 8 should also (closing 6 and 8). You can run double companies (Engine/Truck) out of those houses. I don’t know the history of why and where the stations are at. I bet somewhere in the bowels of government there may have been a councilman that lived in an area that didn’t need a firehouse but got one anyway.

Tim, could you please expound on why you feel they have too many stations? With a residential population exceeding 170,000 and a daytime population exceeding 500,000. The cities “plan” is to drop down from 3 to 2 trucks and increase from 1 squad to 2. The new truck stations are station 10 (the furthest west station in the city) and station 1 (which borders Lisle) to the east. Clearly not the best or most centrally located north and south.

Harry – I agree, E-One definitely makes a long lasting rig. I learned to drive on an 1987 E-One. It was one of the low rider styles. Quite the ugly rig but even at 20 years old it still drove nice. In terms of being easier on the mechanics I’d say yet to a certain extent. Some things are harder than other things on different apparatus builders. I would say the big thing with E-One is that a lot of their parts are pretty universal. Pierce has a lot of parts that are proprietary. The only place you can purchase Pierce parts is through Pierce which drives the price up. I did some TAK4 suspension work a few months ago. Pierce got me for $4,400 for some bushing and misc. pieces. Total rip off. This is probably my primary reason for hating Pierce. Pierce’s parts pricing is off the wall! Each manufacturer has specific parts that can only be purchased through the manufacturer but not to the extreme as Pierce.

A few too many firehouses and a few too close to each other.

mike c I am glad because I think eone makes a long lasting vehicle but also because it will be much easier on the mechs. if everything is uniform like all eone pierce or other

Current plan is trucks at 1 and 10, 10 being the new
tower ladder. Sta 5 will become an engine, with squads at 8 and 9.

Tentatively, trucks will be at 1 and 10. Squads at 5 and 9. This, like every thing in the fire service, is subject to change.

Interesting that they are going to run 2 squads. I agree it sounds like they might have misspoke by saying two engines and two squads. They have 10 stations. I believe stations 1,5 and 9 have trucks. Right now station 8 has the squad. Stations 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 10 have engines. So basically Stations 8 and 10 would have Squads. I am sure 1, 5 and 9 would have trucks. Stations 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 would have engines.

Two engine, two squad capability? Was this supposed to say 4 engine, 2 squad, 2 truck capability?
