We should be so lucky to find a car that old with only that many miles.
I remember in 1984, me and my late grandpa were treated to a behind the scenes tour of Milwaukee Mitchell Airport along with only 3 other people. This included a stop at the maintenance garage and the fire station. My grandpa commented to one of the crew when they said how often they replace the tires on the rigs. He thought the rigs just sat there but they explained that the drive them around for training and to make sure the equipment is in working order. Grandpa wasn’t often easy to have his mind changed but he understood after they politely explained their mission.Seeing those ARFF’s up close was a blast even as a 20 year old and spending time with grandpa doing so made it all the more special.

One standby can be a good amount of miles. Figure a runway is about 1.5-2 (can be longer) miles long. Stage somewhere along it, follow the plane to the end, then if you follow to the terminal, that’s probably another 1-2 miles. Then return. I’d imagine, with the size of O’Hare, you could easily put 5-6 miles on a rig per standby. That’s not including training, fuel trips, etc.

I would imagine it is for 27 years … with foam task force duty and such

Is 18,000 miles normal for an airport fire truck?
