GovHR USA is pleased to announce the recruitment of candidates and selection process for the next Fire Chief for the Village of Arlington Heights.

The fire department is staffed by 108 personnel providing modern-day fire, EMS, public education and other services to the residents and surrounding area. The department provides services from four (4) fire stations with full Fire, EMS (ALS), Fire Prevention and Special Teams Operations. It is a member of the Northwest Central Dispatch System, an intergovernmental dispatch agency providing emergency fire, EMS and police dispatch services to nearly 500,000 municipal residents , with 246,000 calls annually, covering over 170 square miles . The department responded to approximately 10,000 calls annually. The department’s Training Division is not only responsible for day-to-day training, it owns and operates one of the states recognized fire academies from a state-of-the-art training site. The department has an operating budget of $22,635,337 (2018) and has an ISO Class 1 rating, which is one of less than 200 out of 47,000 fire departments in the country. The Village and the firefighter’s union Local 3105 (represents firefighters and Lieutenants)have embraced interest-based bargaining, resulting in very positive labor relations. There was a minimal use of attorneys in the most recent completion of the current agreement.

The Successful Candidate will provide:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Fire Science or related field and more than ten (10) years ofprogressively responsible experience in fire management, fire suppression and EMS experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such asthose listed above. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, Chief Fire Officer Provisional Status or certification and in good standing, Executive Fire Officer (EFO) or the ability to obtain within 4-years of hire.
  • Knowledge of modern fire service/operation methods, techniques, procedures and concepts.
  • Knowledge of governmental administrative procedures and practices including budgeting, purchasing and policy formulation.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws rules, regulations and codes relating to fire suppression and prevention and emergency response activities.
  • Knowledge of human resource management practices such as training, delegation, discipline, etc.
  • Skill in informational analysis and problem solving in order to assess large amounts of information and formulate decisions.
  • Skill in leadership and management techniques in order to coordinate the diversified activities of a large group of individuals towards the achievement of common goals.
  • Skill in organization and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in use of computer hardware and applicable computer software.
  • Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Considerable ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary range is $ 127,000 – $ 140,000 DOQ. A comprehensive benefit package includes participation in the Illinois Downstate Firefighters Pension Fund, health insurance including medical, dental, and vision coverage (also available to dependents), life insurance, flexible spending account and voluntary participation in a deferred compensation program. The Village also offers paid vacation, holidays and sick days.
