Thanks again, Dennis. I appreciate it. I have no idea how or why I never knew the complete rundown of what it would be. I can’t say that anymore. lol

Dennis: OK, I guess I confused myself to the point where I seem to have had no idea what I was talking about. Whoops. LOL
And 101 would actually be 1-10-1, since you could not “tap a 0” ?
I guess I would have liked to see the list typed out to eliminate any confusion by anyone, like myself. lol
For example: http://plaws.net/scan/IL/cfd-signature.html
#4 by Dennis on July 15, 2014 - 10:49 PM
LFD 543..Engine Co. 1 is ” 1″ , The engine co. signatures don’t become 3 digit’s until you get to Engine Co. 112 which is 1-1-2. Engine Co. 113 is 1-1-3, Engine Co. 114 is 1-1-4, etc.
#5 by LFD 543 on July 15, 2014 - 8:56 PM
Dennis, am I mistaken that Engine 1’s signature would be “1-1-1”?
That said, Engine 2 is still just “2”? And 12 is just “1-2”?
I thought they all were at least a 3 digit number; until you got to 2-1-10, for example.
#6 by Dennis on July 15, 2014 - 9:28 AM
Mike MC the signatures still are used. the joker stand might not be around anymore but all tools are ID’ed by the signature.
Engine Co. 2’s signature is ” 2 ” , Engine Co. 12’s signature is ” 1-2 “.
#7 by LFD 543 on July 14, 2014 - 11:28 PM
Mike Mc, thanks. Of course I know the sounder is not used anymore. I thought that there was some way that the number/dash system was incorporated into the MDT system or something, somewhere, to keep that tradition going. Even if it’s not used over the radio like the Command Van’s, HIT’s, DDC’s, etc., still are. I guess I’m wrong. (I forgot that there was no way to tap “0”, but “10” instead)
And I agree that the box response of Engine’s 9 thru 12 is interesting. It should go into the newsletter.
#8 by Mike Mc on July 14, 2014 - 10:03 PM
LFD: They don’t use the sounder anymore so the designation doesn’t mean anything except for the special units, such as 5-1-1 (hazardous incident team). However, assuming my memory is serving, Engine 2 would be -2, Engine 12 would be 1-2, Engine 102 would be 1-10-2 (you cannot tap a zero on the telegraph key, so ten is zero), and Engine 112 would be 1-1-2.
I still think the box alarm response of Engine 9,10, 11, and 12 is interesting trivia. They should use it in the fire museum newsletter.
#9 by LFD 543 on July 14, 2014 - 4:54 PM
How are Engine 2 (Fireboat) and Engine 12 identified? If Eng. 102 is 1-0-2, and 112 is 1-1-2, what am I not thinking of what it would be for Eng.’s 2 and 12?
#10 by Mike Mc on February 20, 2014 - 11:14 AM
So, does the box card for standbys (figuratively speaking since there are no physical box cards anymore) read Engines 9,10,11, and 12?
If so, interesting trivia.
Good news for Engine 119.
#11 by Dennis on February 19, 2014 - 3:56 PM
Engine 12 is housed temporally at Rescue 1 until their new firehouse is built in the near future.
#12 by Drew Smith on January 28, 2014 - 5:13 PM
For those interested, here are the FAA requirements:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2007-title14-vol2/pdf/CFR-2007-title14-vol2-sec139-315.pdf
Part 139.315 classifies ORD an Index E
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2007-title14-vol2/pdf/CFR-2007-title14-vol2-sec139-317.pdf
Part 139.317 requires an Index E to have three vehicles
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2012-title14-vol3/pdf/CFR-2012-title14-vol3-sec139-319.pdf
(h)(2) states the response time requirements.
If you take the vehicle requirements and the response time requirements you can see that for airports such as ORD, DIA, ATL, and DFW (to name a few) you may need more vehicles positioned on the airport to meet the response time requirements.
You will also notice that there is no mention of structural companies being required. In fact, at some airports (none of the major ones I am aware of) the structural and ARFF may be separate departments.
Also here are Advisory Circulars which guide the regulations:
http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.list/parentTopicID/188
#13 by Admin on January 28, 2014 - 5:41 PM
Drew, it doesn’t appear that the Port Authority of NY/NJ has a structural component at Newark/Laguardia or JFK.
#14 by Matt on January 28, 2014 - 1:18 PM
On the 1000 gal tank question, the engine was an add-on the standing city order for city structural engines with 500 gallon tanks so the focus of this engine is probably structural firefighting mainly relying on hydrants versus also airfield support such as how the current Engines 9 and 10 can do with their larger water tanks and foam systems. Long range plans for the airport revealed in the past also showed the addition of another truck company and ambulances to the field as well
#15 by FFEMT on January 28, 2014 - 10:14 AM
Meh, don’t particularly care one way or the other. He knows my feelings towards him in real life, and I felt the need to let people on here know that (compared to the info presented by some of the regulars here) that his information isn’t reliable.
#16 by Scott on January 28, 2014 - 9:56 AM
CFD is dispatched via in-house tones, not over the radio, same as City proper co’s. The MDT’s have the info as well.
12S was put on the rig before it was organized, most likely “Spare”.
The additional Eng & soon to be formed Crash truck are to meet the response time requirements required by the FAA because of the new runway’s. Also, CFD O’Hare exceeds the requirements for the number of ARFF vehicles.
As far as the future squads, pretty ballsy for a commenter on here to bash another one in public forum, this really is the place for that! You have a beef with him, talk to him in private.
#17 by Nick N on January 27, 2014 - 12:29 PM
I realize it isn’t on topic, but how are CFD airport units dispatched? I have the O’Hare public safety trunking system programmed on my scanner, but never hear any of the airport units being dispatched despite visually seeing them leave the the station code 3 on a run. Oddly though I often hear them saying they are in quarters to someone after returning from a run, so i’m not exactly sure what is going on.
#18 by Mike Mc on January 27, 2014 - 11:30 AM
I am surprised it does not have a 1000 gallon tank like Engines 9 and 10. As Matt stated, they must have wanted it for structures, new and proposed, at the south end of the airport.
Forgive my ignorance, but what does the “S” after the 12 mean?
If they have to close Rescue 2 for a new runway, can they cram everything into Rescue 1 and 3 until a new firehouse is built? I am assuming that they will construct the new runway well before they think of building a new firehouse.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
#19 by Matt on January 27, 2014 - 10:48 AM
Addition of companies is most likely to account for the new runways and the new buildings on the edges of the field for air freight and cargo
#20 by danny on January 27, 2014 - 10:39 AM
i noticed his info was more accurate back in the day but with they way they go to press on that magazine (bi monthly) his info has been the topic on convo here for at least a month
#21 by FFEMT on January 27, 2014 - 2:19 AM
He’s on Western Springs Fire Department, as a POC (Paid On Call). I’m not sure of the exact story (it was long before my time), but I know he went through the same academy we use for our POC members….but never operated as a firefighter.
#22 by Tom Foley on January 26, 2014 - 8:50 PM
12S looks good.
#23 by danny on January 26, 2014 - 8:47 PM
what dept is jim on? he isnt a cfd photo guy is he ?
#24 by FFEMT on January 26, 2014 - 6:27 PM
Here are some basic specs:
http://www.spartanerv.com/delivery.aspx?id=37965
Also….don’t take what Jim Regan writes to heart. It is often out of date and not from the most reliable sources. We are on the same fire department (a department he’s never actually been a firefighter at, just a photographer) and he talks a MUCH bigger game than he actually delivers.
#25 by Eric on January 26, 2014 - 5:38 PM
Don’t know the specs on Engine 12 but the shop number is AVF-113
#26 by danny on January 26, 2014 - 3:18 PM
“discussions contine with rosenbauer reguarding the snorkel squads. one set (snorkel and van) is on order for ohare and three sets of snorkels and vans are slated for the city proper. these rigs will replace the existing city squads (1,2, and 5) which are running with 2000 HME/Central states rigs and the o’hare squad 7 which is running with a 2000 pierce lance heavy rescue.”

#27 by Tim on January 26, 2014 - 11:03 AM
Anyone have the Specs and AVF- or D- for E12?
#28 by Nick on January 26, 2014 - 10:51 AM
What with the new moves this year at Ohare adding a crash truck and now an engine. Has CFD been running short at Ohare, its nice to see the upgrades.
#29 by David on January 26, 2014 - 6:55 AM
Great news, 97 Engine companies in service again.
#30 by Bill Post on January 26, 2014 - 1:01 AM
It’s great to see another new Engine company go in service after loosing so many of them over the years.
#31 by danny on January 25, 2014 - 4:40 PM
got the new fire apparatus journal today and they said that the plan for the new squads is a two piece at ohare and 3 2 piece sets in the city proper
#32 by CFD 1979 on January 25, 2014 - 3:15 PM
Correct. All funds are covered by the FAA
#33 by Dan on January 25, 2014 - 2:25 PM
Sorry hit he wrong button . I think the FAA buys these rigs and we staff them right ?
#34 by Dan on January 25, 2014 - 2:24 PM
No engine was put out of service . In addition to mikes question , if the FAA buys these
#35 by Michael M on January 25, 2014 - 2:02 PM
Did the CFD take a engine out of service in order to put Engine 12 in service?
#36 by Dennis on January 25, 2014 - 9:19 AM
The history section left out some details:
