This from Kyle Bernaciak:
I thought I'd share with you some pictures that I took of 6-3-1 (the high expansion foam unit) during a drill back in September. These shots really show the apparatus in action. This drill included Engine 26, Truck 7, Engine 103, and it was under the direction of Battalion 4. The reason Engine 103 was involved in this drill is that if E26 or the truck are out, E103 is the next available company to operate this apparatus. It was told to me that Batt. 4 also would be drilling with other companies in the battalion to get everyone familiar with the apparatus. 6-3-1 is very useful, as you can see, in the case of fires that need to be "smothered." (i.e. basements, confined spaces, small storefronts, etc.) --KB

The engine companies carry the foam. Whch ones I couldn’t tell you.
Some truck companies did to. I don’t know if they still do.
If you’re standing facing the pump panel the foam is on the right
next to the deck gun. 631’s foam units are mounted on a turntable. In the middle of the two units there is a 2 1/2” hose connnection that feeds both units. Each unit has an independent shut off. The engines used to carry the
tee fitting that introduced the foam into the hose line. I bet 631 carries
them too.

Truck 7, I do not have anymore shots. That’s al I took on that day.
Bill…I’m sure that Truck 7 can explain more on that topic. I know that there are many buckets of the foam solution that are sitting in 26’s quarters.

Bill, not on CFD, but had worked with a Hi-Ex foam unit that used to be in the burb’s long ago. The sleeves at that time where chutes that would just be washed out, hung to dry and repacked. The unit was Oak Park FD’s “Messerschmitt” (engine of the unit manufactured by the same company that made the German WWII fighter planes). The foam solution works the same as a foam educator for AFFF… water mixing with the solution distributed via nozzles and aerated into the HI-EX by a large fan, pushing it thru the chute.

Kyle thanks for posting the photos. I was wondering doe’s 631 carry the Hi Ex foam solution on board in plastic foam containers and about how many containers do they have to mix in with the water to produce the foam? How do they mix the foam solution into the machine ,just by pouring it in or do they feed it into the machine via a hose line mixed in at another point?
I would guess that they carry the foam in the black cabinet behind the cab?
As 631 is a small unit I don’t see that much space to carry the foam solution?
Are the foam sleeves disposable ?
Thanks
