Thanks DMC77. Sounds like a good side job for a firefighter: purchasing, programing, and reselling scanners detailed to the customer’s request. I preferred Bearcat over Radioshack, so I’m hoping someone can answer my Uniden question. Thanks again.

I went through ebay for both my home based scanner (Radio Shack PRO-197) and for my mobile needs – a used Motorola XTS1500. All told, the scanner cost me around $325. You can program it yourself by either following the directions that came with it, or go to YouTube and search for “programming Radio Shack PRO-197” as I did. I actually found the 2 minute YouTube clip easier to follow than the directions. I only really use it for basic scanning of CFD freqs, the unit has more capabilities than I could ever use. If you live outside of the city by more than a few miles, you may need to figure out an antenna solution.
For mobile use, I went to ebay again and bought a used Motorola XTS1500 in the frequency range called UHF Range 2 (450-520 Mhz). This is important as the majority of the Motorola portables on ebay in UHF are for Range 1 which will NOT work for CFD. I already have an XTS portable that I used to use for CFD, now it is used for everybody else in the VHF range, so I already had a battery, charger, etc. We use XTS1500s at work so my guy there programmed it for free. You can get everything you need for the Motorola portable from ebay. The XTS has three frequency bands so I have all of the CFD fire, EMS and CPD frequencies on one radio. All told it cost me around $350-375, but the price goes up and down depending on the ebay market. I hope this helps!

If I was to buy a Uniden Bearcat B3996XT digital scanner, can I simply input the new 400 mghz frequencies for Englewood and Main or is there more to it than that? Want to be sure before I spend about $500.
Thank you very much anyone that responds.
Tight fisted and cautious.

The best place i know to get a cheap digital scanner is wwwscannermaster.com. They usually get it to you in three or four days after purchasing it from them by UPS. I bought like three scanners from them and been happy with them. To buy a digital scanner you usually have to mail order them because of the cost. If live by DOWNERS GROVE il try frys electronics on finley rd. I hope i helped you out.
