Of interest … overseas visitors

From an overseas visitor:

My dear,

Exactly a year ago I was at your place in Chicago.

I was with my wife and brother.

We gave you a book about firefighters from Warsaw published on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the Warsaw Fire Service.

We have been very kindly received by you.  We’ve got souvenir T-shirts that I proudly wear for special occasions like today’s.  We received commemorative medals from your commander (unfortunately I don’t remember my name).

A young firefighter from Poland showed us everything.  His name was probably David.

I remember that time very nice.  I am very grateful to you.

On the occasion of your holiday, which falls in Poland 4, I wish you first of all health.  All good and may God lead you only along the paths of good. Marek ?ukowski (maxxiorr@gmail.com)

Of interest … Larry Eckhardt ‘the Flagman’

Excerpts from kgrg.com:

Larry Eckhardt, also known as ‘the Flagman’ died Tuesday at the age of 63. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 before suffering from vocal cord paralysis.

In 2006, Eckhardt, of Little York, Illinois, started placing flags along funeral routes to honor first responders police officers, firefighters and paramedics. He received the same honor when he traveled back to Little York after spending a month in Iowa City for hospice care.

He placed nearly half a million flags around the U.S. to honor fallen service members, police officers, and firefighters.

Hello

My name is Odd Jakob Haaland from Norway . I hope  you can help me  identifying a fire station 🙂 . My father was in Usa from 1952 to 1956 , I have a super 8 movie clip from 1952 , but I’m not sure where the movie was recorded but i know he was in Chicago and other places , My father is passed away so i cant ask him . I use Google street view and i found a similar fire station with railroad track behind the building  The attached screenshot can it be from Chicago Fire Dept Eng 69 ? There is also a picture of a trolley buss ? The sign on the buss says Irving Park ? Can anyone confirm that the pictures are from the Irving park – Chicago area and Fire Dept Eng 69 ?

Thank you in advance

As seen around … O’Hare Airport

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Unable to afford the cost of college, Henry “Mitch” Mayfield Jr. left Northern Illinois University after a year and joined the Army hoping to jump-start his future. Mayfield Jr., a 23-year-old Army specialist from Hazel Crest, and two other Americans, both contractors with the U.S. Department of Defense, were killed at Manda Bay Airfield by al-Shabab extremists, who claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mayfield Jr. attended Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills before enrolling at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He spent one year at NIU studying business before running short on funding for his education and enlisting in the Army. His decision to join the Army in August 2017 at age 20 was informed both by a desire to build a better future for himself and a sense of duty to serve others.

He had been in Kenya since October, where he worked installing, maintaining, and repairing heating and cooling systems. Before that, he was stationed at Fort Rucker in Alabama, where he served as an air traffic services mechanic with the 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group of the Army’s 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment.

Al-Shabab, based in neighboring Somalia, claimed responsibility for the assault, in which they overran a key military base used by U.S. counterterror forces, killing three and destroying several U.S. aircraft and vehicles. It was the al-Qaida-linked group’s first attack against U.S. forces in the East African country, and the military called the security situation fluid several hours after the assault, which also left five of the attackers dead.

The latest attack comes just over a week after an al-Shabab truck bomb in Somalia’s capital killed at least 79 people and U.S. airstrikes killed seven al-Shabab fighters in response. Last year, al-Shabab attacked a U.S. military base inside Somalia, Baledogle, that is used to launch drone strikes but reportedly failed to make their way inside. The extremist group also has carried out multiple attacks against Kenyan troops in the past in retaliation for Kenya sending troops to Somalia to fight it.

A request for assistance …

Hi,

My name is Michael Byerline. I snapped this picture while on a recent trip to Chicago on December 20th and I’m trying to get it to the wonderful woman who’s in it. I feel like she’d really enjoy having this. Based on the captain’s helmet in the background I’m thinking she’s a part of engine 113? Her helmet says Ambulance 2, I’m not sure if that’s run out of the same facility or not. If you know of anyone I can contact to try to get this picture to her that’d be amazing. Thank you very much!
Best,

Of interest … Firefighters stepping up to help

Excerpts from the indychannel.com:

After a Brownsburg (IN) boy with special needs was denied a visit with Santa because of his service dog, the fire department stepped up way to make a special visit. Members of the Brownsburg Fire Territory brought Santa to him!

Tyler, tried to visit Santa last week in Indianapolis but was denied entry because of his service dog.

Santa ditched his reindeer for the night and hitched a ride in a fire truck to get to Tyler’s house for the surprise. Not only did Tyler get a visit from Santa, but he and his dog got to explore the fire truck, blow the horn, and use a hose! Santa brought Tyler his very own fire truck. The fire department captured the visit live on their Facebook page. They also took the time to give some education about service animals.
