Rusty, where or who is charging 30k for the blackout package? at a recent event rosenbauer’s local sales rep had a new engine with that package and he said it was a 10k add on, sutphen did it for a dept local to my area and the rep at the same event with the sutphen rig on display said 15k. is it pierce?

Rusty you don’t get it.

What I find laughable is that the fire chief buying this rig pleaded to the village to replace their tower ladder with the current truck because it would give them 5 more feet of ladder height to reach victims on the 4th floor of the hotels in town and they bitbon that BS. I’d like to see how he justifies losing 50′ of reach.

Dennis: So you honestly are going to tell me that paying extra thousands of dollars for two tone paint or green lights is fiscally responsible so we don’t hurt some firefighters feelings? Your comments are the EXACT reason they need a procurement officer. You brought up all items that firefighters waste thousands of dollars on, that have nothing to do with the performance of the vehicles. I would totally understand if painting the roof black was for safety reasons or that the bell would alert the public better. So we add that all to save moral? Thats one of the behaviors that has caused the fire truck industry to keep charging more money because they know that people will pay anything for fancy gold leaf, or linex on their truck. Why is that? Because very very rarely does anyone ever ask….Why did we pay 5k for a bell engraved with our logo on it? Does it make the truck pump better? Does it reach that apartment building better?

Rusty, I was mainly referring to the fundamentals of a vehicle. I do agree that some of the “fluff” on any apparatus can be extreme, especially when considering that the cost of these “want to have items” is typically borne by the taxpayer. All parties involved need to exercise some fiscal restraint in today’s economy while ensuring that the purchase can adequately fulfill its intended purpose.

Rusty while I understand your comment I would 1000% disagree with your statements. The fire service is tradition based so if a procurement officer only took into account the very basic package and 1000% on the functionally of the apparatus then we wouldn’t have things like black roofs, red and green lights, bells, graphics, etc. while you might think those are not worth the money I believe those things for some small part effect the moral of a department and that plays a huge part in the performance of a person.

Tt you are correct in the fact that committees don’t go to the table and say hey lets waste the tax payers dollars and buy a piece of s***. However, most committees don’t have a clue on the buying aspect of it. They do not realize that the “Black Out Package” of Linex on everything costs $30,000.00 and does nothing to enhance performance other than look cool. What these cities/towns need is a procurement officer that handles purchases for everything from street sweepers to fire trucks, to vests for the police.

I forgot this part,
If 100% pre-payment total cost is $993,993 which includes a $32,475 savings.

It is always intriguing to read the variety of negative comments on here pertaining to what a department feels may work best for THEM. I thought the fire service was sort of a “band of brothers”. I can’t imagine any apparatus committee actually putting a spec. together and dialing it down to a specific preferred manufacturer thinking “Geez, I hope this new “XXX” is a total piece of sh.. and a complete waste of taxpayer dollars”

The cost of this pumper/snorkel is going to be, get this…..$1,012,659 with a discount of $13,809 if the chassis is paid upon completion of the cab/chassis. A total of $998,850.
And this is going to replace their truck.
This info is from the Village of Romeoville 2022-2023 proposed budget and the Village board meeting agenda.

Total waste. These are only good for putting up a master stream in a real tight spot. People do this to say” they have a snorkel”.

Romeoville has wanted this for a couple of years now. Not sure the practicality of this but when it’s all said and done, it’ll probably be a halfway reliable rig. I just don’t see this being purposed well.
Where will this be stationed?

Sounds like they take the generic approach. That way they don’t get stuck on builder/brand loyalty and feel obligated. There’s more freedom that way. On the other hand, there’s much to be said about standardization where you don’t have to train everybody when a rig from a different builder comes in.

Talk about a mix of rigs, they have pierce, smeal, seagrave and now rosenbauer

Frankfort’s experience was vastly different being as they bought the first of the relaunched snorkel brand… this being rosenbauer version will be similar to the city squad company 2nd pieces as well as evergreen park squad 5.

I think recently in the last year or two they took delivery of a Seagrave engine
which they used to have many years ago……the

Useless land barge. Learned nothing from Frankforts experience apparently. Will be a lousy pumper that is heavy and has hose bed issues and a lousy truck with its whopping 25 feet of horizontal reach at 30 feet in the air. It works in Chicago because they can drive on the sidewalks, set up in all the vacant lots and alleys. Not likely to get vary close to buildings with 75 and 100 foot setbacks or more. It could spend the majority of its life lugging around the boom to EMS runs, LT alarms, citizen assists, lines down, etc. I worked in a snorkel Dept back in the day and it was rarely used and mostly at defensive, thru the roof fires. If a small bucket is desired I would look at Flossmoors T-19 or a Sutphen SP70. Both are engine like and have triple the reach. Bet it will look cool, though.

Why does Romeoville need this????
#19 by Martin on June 20, 2022 - 7:06 PM
This will not replace the current truck.
#20 by Mike on June 20, 2022 - 4:28 PM
Is this going to be in addition to the current truck or are they getting rid of their current truck?

why would this be considered a truck co

I am surprised they are going with a Snorkel for Truck 22. I don’t know Romeoville all that well. I wonder why they decided to go with a snorkel compared to a stick?
