When I was there many years ago, the squad was staffed with two FF/Paramedics. The officers were on the truck/tower and the engine.

Does anyone know if they run an officer on the squad or is it staffed by two firefighters?

Hoffman Estates sold both of their squads several years ago & ran an ambulance out of Sta. 22. This squad is brand new, as they appear to be going back to having the engine-tower-squad concept out of the main station & only running the ambulance if there is sufficient manpower. There is another post on this topic with additional information. To my knowledge, the squad has always run with two.

Is this replacing the old heavy rescue squad #22 and/or squad #22R? Did the always only staff the squad with 2 or is that a change with this new smaller squad?

Looks pretty good. Time will tell how this new GM chassis will hold up.
