They just had a hiring process approx 2 months ago. They only had it open to DOD (Department Of Defense, Military etc) employees. I bet if they opened it up to ANYONE out in the fire service they would get a good number of applicants. It’s a good department, only downside is the possibility of being forced to work 5 straight days

I have a buddy that is a firefighter at Great Lakes and mentioned that the first quarter if this year they spent a million dollars on OT. The problem is Navy region mid Atlantic which Great Lakes is under refuses to hire.

Harry, the problem is with most of the departments in this situation, is that they DO have the budget to hire more personnel to bring back staffing levels, but the city bean counters choose not to. They rather burden the personnel with excessive overtime because in their eyes it is cheaper because they don’t have to pay into pension funds and for health insurance and other benefits. But then there comes a time when the overtime drastically supersedes the costs of hiring the proper amount of personnel allocated per village ordinances and budgets.

well unfortunely this is getting more and more common everywhere and there should be a good solution but if u don’t have money to hire more people then I guess u make the best of it and if that is 16 a day per station or the whole dept I have been to dept where they get 16+ calls every hour
