The Gary Fire Department operated this 1963 Maxim/Snorkel. It had an 85′ boom and carried Maxim serial #2414. It ran as Snorkel Co.1 for many years. It was rebuilt and modified numerous times.

Coming out of station 1 was a task! There used to be an auto dealer with a huge plate glass window in front of the station. I almost ran into that glass when the clutch slipped one day. Missed it! Whew!

That rig had a 13 foot overhang from the nose of the rig to the end of the boom. I always hated that stupid light on the boom, it flashed in your eyes when you drove down the street. The best thing about this rig was the straight pipes on the exhaust. All you had to do was push the clutch in and rev it a few times, you got everybody’s attention.

Love the upside down mounted revolving emergency light on the boom. I bet that unit had plenty of pressure on the front tires for steering.

Does that thing have a long overhang or what?
Must be interesting and unnerving to drive that one.
Regardless, nice to see a MAXIM once in awhile.

Sweet pic, Wayne! Any pics of it in later years or action like Moe asked? Thank you

Oh-My-Gosh!! Wayne this is crazy. I would not like to be the driver on that rig with all the front and rear overhang. Do you have any action shots of it? I had to drive an 85′ job for 12 years and it was no picnic, let me tell you. Thanks for the unusual post.
