The Gary Fire Department operated these 1979 Ford/E-1 pumpers. They had 1250-GPM pumps and 500-gallon tanks. They carried E-One serial numbers 1361,1362,1363, and 1364. They were assigned to many different companies over their long careers.

Speaking of the Ford C chassis, I never understood why the manufacturers nowadays almost don’t produce any COE trucks when they were so popular just a few years back. When you look at the huge amount of different types there were back in the 1940s-80s it’s hard to believe that there are something like 2 types on the whole market now.

That photo and those Ford E/Ones brings back memories of Chicago’s once large fleet of engine companies built using the famous Ford C-cab. While the last batch of engines that Chicago ordered using Ford C-cabs were 1980/81 E/Ones, they also had Ford/Ward LaFrances, Ford/Pierces, and Ford/Seagraves. The CFD started getting engines on the Ford C-cab as early as 1967 when they began taking delivery of different makes and models for the first time in 10 years. From 1956 until late 1966/67 the CFD did not purchase any new engines. The last units that I recall Chicago using with the Ford-C cab were Pirsch rear mounted aerial ladder remounts of 1966 100-foot ladders in 1988. There was also a Ford C-cab chassis in 1978 when 3D Metals remounted another Pirsch aerial for Truck 24. The last official SS1A, Snorkel Squad 1’s second piece which replaced the last fog pressure on SS1, was a 1974 Ford C/Pierce walk around squad. There were also four Ford C/3D Metals units put in service with the new squad companies in late 1980. The last large Light Wagon 911, the first Hose Wagon 611 from the mid 1970s, and the original 511A hazmat support unit all had Ford C-cabs as did some support units like the gasoline truck.
Even though Chicago at one time had many Ford C-cabs, they were a let down when assigned to most of the downtown engine companies in 1982. The 1972 American LaFrance, 2000-GPM pumpers they replaced were much nicer and sturdier.
