Excerpts from the Chicagotribune.com:
Aurora could soon be building a new West Side fire station that has been in the works for almost 10 years. Aldermen are considering a resolution to hire a construction manager and architects to construct Fire Station 7 on Kenilworth Avenue in Lincoln Park. The resolution states that the construction manager would guarantee the project would not exceed $4 million.
A city capital improvement plan, originally submitted in 2007, had the Fire Station 7 replacement in it. The station was built in 1957 and not only is outmoded, city officials said, but is too small to handle a new medic unit.
Funds were approved in the 2016 budget to move forward with the design and engineering phase of the project, which has been completed.
City officials are hoping the council will approve the contract by the April 11 meeting and get station construction underway almost immediately after that. The council’s Finance Committee has already recommended the contract.
Fire officials have said they would like to have the new station operational by mid-December.
