Morton Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

An 87-year-old woman died of injuries she suffered when her clothing caught fire as she cooked Friday morning in her  Morton Grove home.

Morton Grove firefighters responded about 11:20 a.m. to Alice Gutenkauf’s home in the 8400 block of Mason Avenue. Her clothing caught fire as she heated water in her kitchen and she suffered first and third-degree-burns to 70 percent of her body, the fire department said.

She was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, but was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where she died at 8:38 p.m.

Her death was ruled accidental after an autopsy on Saturday.

Oswego Fire Department news

Excerpts from wspynews.com:

A group of Oswego firefighters and paramedics helped deliver a baby boy at a home on Kevin Ln. in unincorporated Oswego. Oswego Firefighter Jon Vickery says this is the first time in his career he’s ever been on a birth call in the home setting.

While he took the lead, he says he couldn’t have made the delivery without the help of his crew.

They are trained to deliver a child, but he says it had been a few years since he went through his OB unit training.

thanks Dan

Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Mount Prospect has agreed to pay the Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District nearly $2 million over the next three years.

The state requires the village to pay the fire protection district a five-year prorated tax levy payment for newly annexed properties formerly served by the district.

But trustees on Tuesday agreed an accelerated three-year plan presented to the board by Fire Chief Brian Lambel, under which the village would provide payments of $665,000 to the district for each of three years. The agreement, which has also been approved by the fire district’s board, precludes court proceedings between the village and the district.

Last year, Mount Prospect annexed the Lynn Court, Addison Court, Busse Road, East of Creek, Malmo Drive, Nordic Road and Carboy Road territories, as well as the United Airlines property. Before to the annexation, the fire district contracted with American Fire and Rescue to provide emergency services.

“This provides financial stability to the Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District to be able to operate for the next three years,” Lambel said.

Under the agreement, the Mount Prospect Fire Department still will provide continuing education to Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District paramedics, while the district will continue to provide mutual aid to Mount Prospect. In addition, both parties agreed to establish a long-term plan for fire protection services to the unincorporated areas.

For several years, the fire protection district expressed concerns over Mount Prospect’s annexations, warning that they would erode the district’s tax base to the point where it would eventually face extinction. Lambel said the village has been in discussions with district Chief Michael Nelson and two members of the district’s board.

“Our goal,” he said, “is to provide options for the district on the future of the incorporated areas and the fire department as a whole.”

Morris Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the morrisherald-news.com:

Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, a Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District / Kurtz EMS Service ambulance was involved in a crash on Interstate 39 in Marshall County, according to a press release from Fire Chief Tracey Steffes.

The Advanced Life Support Ambulance had just transported a patient to Peoria Medical center and was returning to Morris. The ambulance was in the process of passing a semi tractor trailer on Interstate 39, which is a four-lane highway, when a gust of wind caused the driver of the ambulance to over correct.

“The ambulance proceeded to skid down the highway coming to a rest in the northbound ditch” the press relase said.

The driver was able to exit the ambulance and call for assistance. The driver and passenger were taken by transport by Marshall County EMS to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi-tractor was uninjured.

Zion Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Gurnee has signed off on a five-year deal to provide emergency dispatching services to Zion, a move expected to be financially beneficial to both towns.

Dispatching consolidation has been occurring in several suburbs because of a 2015 state law dictating that a 911 operation cannot serve fewer than 25,000 residents. Compliance must occur by July 1.

Zion will pay Gurnee a prorated share of a first-year base fee of $875,000 starting July 1 for dispatching the city’s fire and police calls through April 30, 2018. The contact will run from May 1 through April 30 in each of the final four years and require payments to increase annually by 3.5 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less.

In addition, Zion must place roughly $160,000 it receives annually from taxpayers for emergency dispatching into a fund controlled by a new joint 911 board with Gurnee.

Zion officials said they expect six or seven of the city’s dispatchers will be hired by Gurnee.

Gurnee representatives presented their offer to the Zion 911 board in April. Officials said the village’s dispatching operation is ready to grow and take on more clients such as Zion, which acknowledged a poor financial situation and an inability to upgrade 911 operations.

Elsewhere in Lake County, Lake Zurich in April added Wauconda’s police and fire emergency calls to a 911 client roster that already had Hawthorn Woods, Island Lake, Kildeer and Tower Lakes on it.
