Ironically the previous LODD from TL-34 is the anniversary of the Chicago Stockyards fire where 22 members answered their last alarm.

It wasn’t Chicago’s most recent LODD but Tower 34 did lose Corey Ankum, along with Edward Stringer of Engine 63, on December 22, 2010.

Mabas21 you are arguing about a 30 yr old truck on a post for a fallen brother. Check your priorities. This post was for honoring a fallen brother who gave the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless Dan Capuano. RIP. Take your apparatus so called expertise to another blog, some other time, some other place. Lets respect the fallen. Who cares about your opinion on a 30 yr old truck. Lets pray for FF/PM Capuano’s family and hope that no one ever forgets his spirit.

Wasn’t the last LODD in the CFD from Tower 34 several years ago as well?

3-3-5 Brother. You may return home. We’ll take it from here.

Refurbishing a 30 year old run into the ground Tower Ladder to be a reliable front line unit would very likely cost way more than a new unit as everything on the old rig would have to be replaced and most of it custom fabricated.
#7 by MABAS 21 on December 16, 2015 - 1:54 PM
No it wouldn’t be more costly and that’s not what a FACTORY refurb is. When a manufacturer such as E-One refurbishes a fire apparatus, the chassis, motor, drive train and pump are reused after evaluation if there is any needed overhaul.
In this case, the aerial including basket would be reused with technology upgrades, new electrical and hydraulic components along with the motor, transmission and remaining drive train. It would then receive a fully furnished new cab and body, new tires, emergency lights/sirens and radios/computer.
As we have seen on this site, many departments have had complete manufacturer’s refurbishment of an apparatus which has saved several hundred thousand dollars as compared to the price of a brand new apparatus which is just as reliable.

Retired Commissioner Hoff had some affiliation with Evergreen Park a while back which FF Capuano did as well.
Agree 100% on the class act!

TL34 has had that spare for 2 months
#10 by MABAS 21 on December 15, 2015 - 4:39 PM
Wonder if the CFD would ever consider refurbishing those old E-One open cab tower ladders from the mid/late 80’s. They have the potential to be like the 3 new units on order with a complete frame-up restoration, new enclosed cabs and bodies and technology upgrades at a fraction of the price.

Grumpy,
Anytime a LODD occurs, CFD takes that rig out of service to prep for funeral arrangements and add the deceased name to the rig.
#12 by grumpy grizzly on December 15, 2015 - 3:54 PM
If TL-34 is running a spare hopefully the shops can re-number it for the day of the services.

They may have been running with a spare already. Their assigned rig is 27 years old and is frequently in the shops for repairs. All the towers are in need of replacement
