Despite budget problems, any time that the PD and FD can interact with the public is a good thing. These men and women are good people. Meeting them off the job can show the folks that look at them as the enemy, that they are our friends. PR is priceless.

I like that Dodge Monaco cruiser. It reminds me of the original Blues Brothers movie.

The ISP car is owned by the ISP Heritage foundation, a private historical entity. The car was restored by a CPD officer and acquired by foundation. NO tax dollars were spent on that car.

That’s an awful lot of eye candy there Asher. Thanks.

Wayne. you are right on target. Yes it’s great when they show up and meet the public. The cop haters out there can take it or leave it but it can at the very least inspire some youngster to consider law enforcement or fire/emt for a vocational calling regardless of which police department shows up. You also have to take manpower and equipment availability into account not to mention politics and logistics. I agree DMC that McCormick Place is big enough to house just about anything you want in there but you also have to remember that other exhibitors may have had dibbs on space so CFD and ISP we shoehorned in.
That place is amazing. Here in Milwaukee, we have the Wisconsin Center that was built in the late 1990’s. While it’s a nice enough building, the dumb dumbs built it way too small. You could fit about 3 or more Wisconsin Centers into McCormick Place with room to spare. One of the FORD salesmen at the Milwaukee Auto Show told me that they would love nothing better than to bring in some bigger FORD trucks but the elevators are too small and there are no ramps to drive them up. So much for any fire apparatus display here.

While I do live three hours north of Chicago, I do love coming to the city and photographing CFD and CPD vehicles. If anyone is interested, here are a few of my photo galleries of public safety events in Chicago the past few years…

Man, the cops can’t win. People want them to be more accessible and then whine they show up places. I think it’s awesome they go to the auto show to display some of their history and meet with the public.

Also Crabby the CFD could fit any of their rigs into McCormick place, even if it isn’t on fire. They held the FRI show there a few years back and there were rigs alplenty. Which, speaking of rigs on display, reminds me just about one month until FDIC in Indianapolis!

The ISP was also at the motorcycle show in Rosemont on 2/14-15. Both booths were slimmed down from years past. I don’t mind the expenditure for their presence, as a lot of it involves PR for safe driving, etc.. I also bought license plate frames to support the ISP memorial in Springfield.
In years past the CPD/CFD had a joint booth/display that was also geared towards PR and broadcasting their message of crime prevention and fire safety.

I agree with you in that in would be nice to see a CFD pumper or something not too big to fit in there. I recall one year one of the military branches had a helicopter in there. I was hoping GM would have had the police CAPRICE like they did last year but that car’s days are numbered.

In 2013, the Chicago Police Department had a display. But CPD has not been at the Chicago Auto Show since then. They were not there in 2014 and not there this year.
On a side note, it would be nice to see more fire trucks at CAS.

I could be wrong but I’m sure the officers were there on their own time or perhaps buring some comp time soley for PR. The USMC was there as well so perhaps a similar arrangement for them. Can’t comment on the cost of the display but if they didn’t show up, people would(for good reason what the police have to hide by not showing some the their equipment.

Nice public relations for the state police, but very questionable use of the money spent for the display and the use of the officer’s time in view of the state’s fiscal crisis.

I saw that display last Saturday when I was down there. It’s always fun and interesting to attend the auto show.
