The Chicago Tribune has an article about
Chicago police shot and killed a knife-wielding man who chased paramedics responding to a 911 call for a person stabbed, according to authorities.
The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of 71st Street and Racine Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood. The man shot by police died at 12:08 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A spokesman for that office said the man had been identified as 62-year-old Michael Myers of the 11300 block of South Indiana Avenue.
Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police lodge that represents rank-and-file officers, said a beat car responding to the scene encountered the man after he had chased paramedics and jumped on and off a moving fire truck.
The officers had at least one window open in their vehicle at the time, Camden said. The man approached the officers on the passenger’s side, Camden said. While this was happening, officers yelled at the man to drop the knife. When the officer opened fire, he shot through his open window while leaning over toward his partner’s seat as far as he could, Camden said.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed the shooting but provided no other details.

I’m not implying the officers did anything wrong! I just thought it was a good p.r. move FOP.

Smart move by FOP to go on record with the story before the CPD media office/brass/state’s attorney. Looking out for their police officers by placing them in the most favorable light. By no means an official statement but how many members of the public pause to consider that? Most people will only remember the first version that they were exposed to. There may be a lesson to be learned here for some fire departments and/or locals.
When a big shot officially says that they are waiting for all the facts they often really mean that they are waiting to decide whether or not to take disciplinary action.

“How do you think he feels now? Better? Or worse?”
