This from Steve Redick:
So I was talking with some fellow fire fans and we were discussing when we had seen 671 at work prior to it’s resurrection for the latest 5-11. I trolled through my archives and found these images..taken at a 5-11 & 2 Specials 2232 S Grove st. April 14 1989. This fire involved a huge amount of tires in the old Cuneo Press complex, and 1 of these buildings was used in the final fire in the movie backdraft. One shot shows a real rarity, 2 turret wagons working. LDH was in limited use at this fire … still kinda new to us. The next day was the famous art gallery 5-11 … what a coupla days this was!!!!

Were these two fires the only case they had two 5-11s in such a short time? ”
Other same day 5-11’s that I can remember offhand were the Hilker-Bletsch 1961 fire around 6am 01-28-1961 that took the lives of 9 FF’s and the Lakeview Bowling alley fire early afternoon of the same day
The 2nd would be the Tower Olds fire 1228 Wells morning fire and the 1700 blk of Washtenaw fire that took 13 bldg’s in early evening hrs both on 01-10-1982
There are probably others especially during the 1950’s and 1960’s

September 18, 1997, there was a 5-11 & 2 special alarms, (and an EMS Plan 1) at 2750 W. 35th Street, along the Stevenson Expressway. I was there taking pictures. I remember not being able to see half of the huge buildings that were on fire (there were 2 or 3), because it was not easy to get to – walking through grass/weeds that was nearly as tall as I am, and collapse zones set up. I believe this fire was originally thought to be just a forklift on fire inside one of the bldgs., but fire was in the walls and took off from there. I was stuck in traffic on I-55, I think as the 2-11/3-11 were pulled. Heavy smoke blew across I-55. None of my pics have a Turret Wagon in operation, but that does not mean that one (or more) Turret’s were not used there.

Chuck, thanks for the info, I was looking for some photos but I finally found a (prety realistic) acryl painting of the fire instead! Here’s the link:

David, it wasn’t so much the closeness of the fires as the magnitude of the two alarms on one platoon day. The fire was at 410 W. Superior, in a building which housed multiple art galleries.

Were these two fires the only case they had two 5-11s in such a short time?! Also anybody knows anything closer about the 2nd 5-11 (links,…)?! I couldn’t find any info on the web.

Does anyone have the date 6-7-3 was assigned their current 1981 Chevy pickup?
Thanks in advance.

This was the day where they had 2 5-11s on 1 platoon (plus specials) – they had 410 W. Superior the next morning – the first one, when they pulled the EMS Plan II, I was on Ambulance 10, and they had us Change Quarters to A-21. The P.O. was John Florine, and he grabbed me and said “Let’s go, before they change their minds”. Just as we got to E-34, they gave us a run to 65th & Drake, and when we went ALS to Holy Cross there were several comments about our being lost…..

From what I have seen on the smaller units, almost standard stack tips as the engines (1″ up to 2″) but there may be some bigger tips (2-1/4″ up to a 2-1/2″) stored as the number of ports coming in, the guns can certainly flow the higher GPM.

I want to say 1-1/8 to 3″ on 6-7-1. I dont know on the smaller unit but the guns are much smaller.
