Waukegan Fire Department news

Excerpts from Fox59.com:

The Waukegan Fire Department is urging people to not keep hand sanitizer in their cars due to the risk of fire after firefighters responded to a car fire Thursday afternoon. A preliminary investigation revealed the fire appeared to be caused by a small bottle of hand sanitizer that was left on the dashboard.

“The owner had been refilling with 80% alcohol sanitizer that was supplied by their employer. It appears sunlight shining through the windshield onto the sanitizer was enough to cause ignition,” the fire department said on Facebook.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was out. They said the owner sprayed some water through a hole in the windshield but it likely was extinguished due to lack of oxygen.

“The Waukegan Fire Department is aware of other incidents similar to this happening as more and more people are using a higher alcohol concentration hand sanitizer due to our current pandemic,” the department said. “As the heat of summer is near we STRONGLY recommend that hand sanitizers not be kept in cars.”

Commercial fire in Waukegan, 6-15-20

Excerpts from the Waukegan FD Facebook page:

This afternoon around 3pm the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a working structure fire in a large strip mall in the 2300 block of Grand Ave. First arriving units found smoke and fire showing from the roof line of this 15 unit strip mall with a large attached medical building.

Chief Bridges would like to express how proud he is and hopes that everyone else should be as well with the firefighters that extinguished this rapidly advancing fire and safely mitigated a potentially disastrous outcome! The Waukegan spirit of teamwork was shining through the many community members who acted quickly to move vehicles that were impeding access to strip mall. The aggressive tactics deployed by firefighters prevented the fire from destroying both the medical building and adjacent businesses, over half of which reopened their doors within two hours. While there was some damage, much more extensive damage was prevented. We are pleased to share that there were no injuries.

Thank you to our neighboring fire departments who assisted and the Waukegan Police Department that handled traffic control and scene safety during the rush hour.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Lenzi is investigating the cause of the fire.

Waukegan Fire Department news

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Waukegan firefighters rescued 15 people from Lake Michigan Saturday in two separate incidents that occurred at the same time. The fire department received reports that 14 people had fallen off their boat and into the water about 6:30 p.m. As firefighters were arriving to that incident, someone in a private vessel rode up and told them that a man had fallen off a nearby jet ski and gone under the water.

The crews pulled a man out from under the water after an unknown amount of time. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

After the jet skier was recovered, the firefighters focused on assisting the U.S. Coast Guard with removing the other 14 people, none of which were injured and the situation was concluded about 9:30 p.m.
