New engine for Villa Park

From the March 12 board meeting – Villa Park orders new engine to replace Engine 82

16.Resolution of the Village of Villa Park, DuPage County, Illinois, authorizing the purchase of a fire engine from Global Emergency Products for a total net price in the amount of $571,661. The fire department currently has three fire engines (pumpers) in its fleet. Two are frontline engines and the third is a reserve. Reserve Engine E80 is a 24-year-old Emergency One (E-One) with 88,000 miles and over 11,000 hours of engine time. The engine has reached its in-service life with the Villa Park Fire Department. The village has been saving to fund the purchase of this engine for five years. To avoid the 2018 price increase, the engine would be ordered prior to the end of the current fiscal year; however the cost of the engine would be paid out of SY18 funds. Funds are available in the SY18 Equipment Replacement Fund account number 65.502.02.401 for this purchase. It is estimated that the shipment date will be in March of 2019.

Villa Park Fire Department news

From the inVillaPark.com:

Villa Park Fire Department Awarded FEMA Grant to Replace Breathing Apparatus

The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) recently awarded the Villa Park Fire Department a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant to purchase 26 self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

The grant will cover $189,564 or 90 percent of the purchase cost to replace 14-year-old SCBAs. Each new air pack comes with two air bottles, wearing harness, and a mask. In addition, the grant will be used to purchase one new integrated air compressor/fill station for the new bottles.

The new equipment will improve the safety and effectiveness of the firefighters during fire suppression operations as well as other incidents that would require the use of an SCBA. The new SCBAs will improve standardization with neighboring fire departments/districts, as many of them have similar models where the air bottles, masks, etc. are interchangeable.

Villa Park adds two firefighters

From VillaPark.com:

Villa Park Welcomes Newest Firefighter/Paramedics

New Firefighter Paramedics 2015.jpg

The Villa Park Board of Trustees welcomed the two newest firefighter/paramedics to the Villa Park Fire Department on Sept. 14, 2015 during the board meeting. Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik recognized Jeff Brown and Steve Lyons for completing their one-year probationary period with the department and achieving permanent assignment in Villa Park. Both received Office of the State Fire Marshal certification in Vehicle Machinery Operations and Fire Apparatus Engineer this year and together have completed over 1,300 hours of probationary training.

Firefighter/Paramedic Jeff Brown, a Downers Grove South High School graduate, attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Brown also worked as a part-time firefighter at the Pleasant View Fire Protection District and graduated from the Romeoville Fire Academy in March 2014.

Firefighter/Paramedic Steve Lyons, a St. Charles High School graduate, also graduated from the College of DuPage paramedic program with high honors. Lyons worked as a part-time firefighter at the Hampshire Fire Department and graduated from the Pingree Grove Fire Academy in February 2014.

“We are very lucky to have Jeff and Steve as full-time members of the Villa Park Fire Department to serve and protect the residents of Villa Park,” Chief Rakosnik said.

New engine for Villa Park (more)

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

It’s been a long time coming, and now the Villa Park Fire Department’s brand new fire engine is ready for duty. The engine was scheduled to begin service Aug. 14, after arriving at the department in early July. The new engine was paid for largely with a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The village was awarded the $432,000 grant in July 2014 … the total cost of the engine was $522,000, so the village contributed about $90,000.

The new engine replaced the village’s 26-year-old engine, which was donated to the University of Illinois’ fire academy for training purposes.

Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik said it was “long overdue,” and after undergoing training on the new engine over the past month, the firemen are very excited to put it into use.

Rakosnik said the new engine has airbags, LED lighting, air conditioning, nicer seating, more compartments and a different pumping mechanism, and it carries paramedic equipment.

This isn’t the first time the fire department has applied for the FEMA grant. They applied in 2012 and didn’t get it. Rakosnik said they reworked the wording in the application and reapplied at the end of 2013.

“We had a lot of equipment that needed to be replaced,” he said. “Now we’re on a schedule to replace our vehicles. We’re replacing our ambulances every nine years and our fire engines every 21 years.”
