Elgin Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Firefighters pulled out two workers from a trench Friday afternoon in Elgin after one man fell from a ladder and landed on the other man, authorities said.

The men were contractors digging huge trenches to put in a natural gas pipeline off Mccornack Road near Big Timber Road, Elgin Fire Department Batallion Chief Rich Carter said.

“They were about 20 feet down in the bottom of the trench,” Carter said. “They were both injured.”

fFirefighters were lowered into the trench to tend to the workers’ injuries, which were serious. Both men were pulled out manually with ropes and pulleys.

“It took us about 40 minutes to get them out of the trench,” Carter said.

The men were taken to hospitals by ambulance and helicopter.

Several neighboring fire departments responded with rescue personnel, including Pingree Grove, Hampshire, Bartlett, and Rutland and Dundee townships.

Worker trapped in trench in Niles 7-19-14 (pt 3)

This from Steve Redick

Niles had a TRT (technical rescue) box alarm last night in the 8500 Block of N Olcott. From what I could gather they had one worker trapped in a hole collapse from construction project in front of a house. The Niles aerial was raised with some kind of block or hoist mechanism attached, but not in use when I was there. I could make out some shoring in place, and a “sewer sucker” in use. The victim was extricated apparently in good condition about 90 minutes into the incident. Was able to get some nice rig shots as well.

CFD Rescue Vac goes in service

On December 6th of last year, The Chicago Fire Department issued an administrative order adding a new tool to the arsenal of the Special Operations Division. Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 was established as a new CFD asset. Assigned to the Special Operations facility at 39th and Honore, 5-2-4 is an X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many may have seen displayed last summer for the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show at McCormick Place. It is on an LN Series Ford chassis and has been modified by Rescue Vac Systems, a local company that upgrades the equipment for emergency rescue operations.  5-2-4 will respond to city-wide trench rescue incidents and will be available for suburban trench rescues through the MABAS Box Alarm System.
