Chicago FD involved in 2 crashes

There have been two recent crashes involving CFD apparatus.

The first was on Friday involving a spare ambulance and a school bus: From the Chicago Tribune:

A Chicago Fire Department ambulance on its way to a call was involved in a crash with a school bus, injuring two paramedics in the Hanson Park neighborhood, officials said.

The crash happened at about 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of Grand and Central Avenues on the Northwest Side, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva.

The ambulance was responding to a call on the 5900 block of West Grand Avenue and it is believed that the ambulance had its emergency lights and siren activated, Roccasalva said.

The driver was the only person on board the school bus at the time of the crash, said Roccasalva. He refused treatment at the scene.

The two paramedics on board the ambulance were each taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the other to Resurrection Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Roccasalva.

The second was this morning involving Truck 19 and a car atnWashington and Des Plaines. The truck was en route to a still alarm in a high-rise when the driver of a car may have failed to yield to them and struck the officer’s side of the body. The car’s driver was transported to the hospital. None of the firefighters were injured. Truck 19 was able to drive from the scene, but two compartments (hydraulic spreaders and RIT gear) were damaged and unable to be opened.
