Illinois Fire Service news

Excerpts from thecentersquare.com:

Despite recent rains in some parts of Illinois, the state as a whole is dealing with a drought, causing concerns over fire hazards from fireworks, as Illinois is one of three states that do not allow fireworks. That doesn’t stop residents from going over the border to buy them from neighboring states.

Fire officials say residents should cancel any bonfires, fireworks, or any open flame until the state receives more rain.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks started an estimated 12,264 fires in 2021, including 2,082 structure fires, 316 vehicle fires and 9,866 outside and other fires. These fires caused 29 civilian injuries and $59 million in direct property damage.

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal encourages everyone to let the professionals handle fireworks. They note that sparklers account for the greatest number of fireworks injuries, and often to the youngest victims.

As communities around the state prepare to celebrate the holiday with a fireworks display, a recent grass fire during a HomerFest fireworks display in Homer Glen may be a sign that there needs to be extra caution this year when dealing with pyrotechnics.

State Fire Marshall, James A. Rivera presented a check to the chief of the Kirkland Community Fire District to replace aging equipment.

Kirkland Community Fire District, in rural DeKalb County, was one of those 67 departments to receive grant funding. The department was awarded  $22,866.55 to be used to purchase the latest generation of battery-powered, hydraulic extrication equipment.

According to Fire Chief Chad Connell it has been about 20 years since the current (older) equipment has been replaced.

“With the equipment that we’re replacing with this check today is going to help the community in automobile, auto automobile accidents. The equipment is lighter, it’s more forgiving for for people to use. The technology is going to help us be able to access vehicles quicker” Connell stated.

Kirkland Community Fire District looks to replace an ambulance within the next month as well as possibly getting a front line engine. These purchases will help the district stay up to date and safe in the future.

Skokie Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Skokie Fire Department (SFD) was honored by two state agencies this month for it’s effort to educate residents on fire safety and smoke alarm installation. The SFD was recognized by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal for outstanding contributions.

Skokie worked with both offices to launch the Be Alarmed! smoke alarm installation program last year. The two groups distribute fire safety educational materials and 10-year smoke alarms to participating Illinois fire departments who then distribute them to residents. All the educational materials and smoke alarms are paid for by the IFSA and OSFM offices. In 2018, the fire department installed 168 alarms in 50 homes.
