Multi-vehicle crash in Niles, 7-10-20

Excerpts from the Journal-topics.com:

A high-speed crash Friday evening in Niles damaged six vehicles, but resulted in only minor injuries.

Police did not initially say how fast the black Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 34-year-old Des Plaines man, was going westbound on Oakton Street as it approached Prospect Street. However, it was learned the Jetta somehow drove into the eastbound lanes just east of Prospect and struck a white GMC SUV driven by a 49-year-old Morton Grove woman.

This from Tyler Tobolt:

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Michelle Aprati, a mother of four and a Niles firefighter and paramedic for the last 16 years was working a shift when she received word that she had breast cancer. The hardest part of her diagnosis was telling her family — both at home and at the firehouse. And like family, the men of the Niles Fire Department stepped forward to offer their support.

On Feb. 16, they and members of the Park Ridge, North Maine, Morton Grove, Skoki,e and Glenview fire departments gathered at the Niles fire station to shave their heads in solidarity with Aprati, who is in the middle of her first phase of chemotherapy treatments. She had been planning to have her husband shave her head due to the hair loss she was experiencing from the treatments, but when she heard members of the department wanted to do a mass shaving event at the fire station, she agreed to hold off.

The event also acted as a fundraiser to help pay her medical expenses not covered by insurance. When someone offered to donate $500 if Fire Chief Marty Feld agreed to shave his decades-old mustache in addition to the hair on his head, Aprati picked up the shaver. About 50 people, most of them fire personnel or family members, volunteered to have their heads shaved.

In addition to contributing financial donations, firefighters sold pins shaped like pink ribbons to raise money for Aprati. She is the only female firefighter/paramedic in Niles hired in 2003 and working there ever since. Her father was a fire chief in Elk Grove Village and Itasca.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in December, she is in her sixth of 12 rounds of chemotherapy and has felt well enough to continue working her regular shifts. She acknowledges, though, that as her treatment progresses, fatigue may force her to take some time off. After her first series of treatments, she will begin a second phase that requires four cycles of new cancer-fighting drugs. Surgery and radiation will follow. Her cancer spread to her lymph nodes and is considered to be stage 3 or 4, but she explained that she is taking her doctor’s advice to focus on how it is being treated, rather than the stage given to it.

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from the journal-topics.com:

The Niles Fire Department is changing its command staff and reviving the position of deputy chief, a position which had gone unfilled since 2008. District Chief Robert Greiner reported for duty Friday, Oct. 25, in his new role as Niles’ deputy fire chief of operations.

Scott Guerino becomes the third district chief for community risk reduction, joining District Chief Orlando Diaz in charge of training, and District Chief Rich Scipione overseeing emergency medical service.

District chiefs work shifts with firefighters, 24 hours on and 48 hours off.

The new structure would grow the department’s overall budget, but the fire chief said the more complicated administrative workload requires the additional command staff.

Extra administrative work had been assigned to the three district chiefs to be completed during their shifts. That has become difficult as the volume of calls this year is set to outpace last year, when firefighters responded to 7,282 calls — the most in the department’s history.

Additionally, Niles has a reciprocal agreement with Morton Grove, over and above standard mutual aid, where Niles district chiefs respond with Morton Grove firefighters to command a scene, and Morton Grove district chiefs respond into Niles  when required. That high operational tempo has caused district chiefs to come in on their off time to complete administrative work, which will now be completed by Greiner.

Engineer Jim Leibach is often seen in a community outreach role at community events, generally working with children. Other programs, such as the new service where firefighters install smoke detectors in residents’ homes, along with other educational and community outreach, will be Guerino’s responsibility.

Evan Schachtel was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Michael Nelson to fire apparatus engineer. Darrion Roszakowski and Jake Rusnac joined the department as new firefighter/paramedics this week.

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from the journal-topics.com:

The Niles Arts & Culture Advisory Council is overseeing efforts to install at least three and possibly four murals in prominent locations around the village including one on the wall of Fire Station No. 2: a 12-ft. by 50-ft. mural dedicated to firefighters.

The same day firefighters hosted an open house and pancake breakfast at Station No. 3 on Jarvis Avenue last month, large aluminum panels were installed on Station No. 2’s exterior wall along Cumberland. The artist got to work crafting an image depicting firefighters’ missions of saving lives, education and firefighting which includes an ambulance, a firefighter in turnout gear holding a smoke detector and talking to children, and a pair of boots as they typically are lined up ready to step into at a moment’s notice.

Artists are being paid $1,000 for design and $1,500 for labor for murals at the three sites.

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from the journal-topics.com:

When people call 911 for ambulance service in Niles, their insurance company is charged a fee. Officials are considering increasing those fees to insurance companies after a proposal to set a flat $1,500 charge for paramedic ambulance service within the village.

Currently there is a tiered system for billing Niles residents versus non-residents with differing charges for basic life support, advanced life support.  Charges range from $500 for basic life support for a Niles resident to a $1,150 charge for advanced life support for a non resident. All vehicles responding to medical calls in Niles are considered top advanced life support, making a tiered system outdated.

Most North and Northwest suburban communities are now charging insurers $1,500 for all ambulance calls. The proposed change would bring Niles in line with those other communities. The proposal would include balanced billing, meaning that if the insurance company pays less than the entire amount, the village would accept the insurers payment and would not bill the patient for the difference. Under the proposal, charges would apply to Niles patients even if they were treated and transported by paramedics from another fire department responding to Niles as part of local mutual aid agreements.

Asked about charges for a non-insured patient who is transported by firefighters, the fire chief said, “It goes to billing. Each person would be looked at individually. The village can walk away (from collecting a bill), but it’s a process worked out with the billing company.”

The proposal may also need finance committee review before it is brought to trustees at a village board meeting for a final vote.

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from the journaltopics.com:

A new Mako Air Compressor used to fill firefighters’ oxygen tanks was installed at Niles Fire Station No. 2 late last month thanks to a $55,000 competitive federal grant awarded a year ago.

The federal grant, applied for in 2017, required a 10 percent local match, meaning the village paid a little more than $5,600 for the machine including installation. The $55,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Assistance To Firefighters grant paid the remaining costs for the compressor.

Before the new unit was installed Aug. 21, firefighters used one air compressor to fill tanks at Station 3 on Jarvis Avenue. Station 2 is located at Dempster Street and Cumberland Avenue. Transporting and topping off oxygen air bottles at Station 3 on a regular basis was inefficient and wasted about 40 minutes in driving time between the two fire stations. The new system will improve readiness and save time and money.

Recently the department was awarded a $56,000 grant from the same program, applied for in 2018, for cardiovascular fitness equipment, which would need to be purchased and installed before Aug. 21, 2020.
