4-Alarm house fire for Newport Township FPD 10-24-13

Newport Township firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire this morning in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The house sits well off the road and backs up almost directly to I-94 just past the toll booth.

Arriving companies were unable to spot the fire until they made the long driveway off of Mill Creek Road. They found a large, two-story home with a fire in the upper level. Since the area is without hydrants, the alarm was upgraded immediately to a Box Alarm, then to a 2nd Alarm shortly thereafter. One engine and a 75′ quint made it up the driveway and a relay operation was initiated from the street. Three portable tanks were used on the road as two engines supplied 5″ lines to the quint and the engine in the driveway.

As the fire overhead grew, companies had to pull out and resort to a defensive operation. Several hand lines and an aerial pipe were put into operation. Due to the water needs and the route tenders had to take to refill and return, the alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for additional tenders.

4th Alarm house fire in Wadsworth 4-30-13 (pt 2)

Scott Peterson was at Newport Township’s 4th Alarm fire on Monday in Wadsworth and has submitted many images which will incorporate several posts.

On Tuesday April 30,2013 the Newport FPD received calls of a fire @ 14541 Juniper Ct. Co’s arrived, found a very hvy volume of fire from the roof & interior of the home. The Zion ladder truck arrived and was immediately setup for water tower ops. Initially only one porta tank was available with most of the water going to the Zion truck. The alarm was quickly elevated from a the 2nd alarm on arrival to the 4th alarm. This brought numerous Eng’s & Tenders from MABAS Div 4 as well as MABAS Div 101 (Kenosha County WI). It appears Twin Lakes FD was the farthest Dept to respond. Eventually, 3 porta-tanks setup in series with a very successful continous flow of water with no loss. Considering the amount of fire conditions crews had on arrival and porta tanks and excellent job was done for knockdown.  You’ll see in one photo the complete collapse/failure of a large section of the 2nd flr thru the C division window above the back deck.
Pics of the fire today, with apparatus and more overall scene shots to follow.

Fatal MVA involving school bus in Newport Township 4-5-13

An accident this morning involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles resulted in one death and several injuries. The incident occurred at the intersection of Route 173 (Rosecrans Road and Kilbourn Road. Reports are that the school bus ignored a red light and was hit broadside by an open-top Jeep Wrangler. The bus then hit a Jeep Cherokee as the bus rolled onto it’s side. All of the school children were out of the bus when the first fire companies arrived. A 3rd Alarm EMS (Life-Safety) Box was requested. Several transports were made via ambulances and many children were driven to the hospital on another school bus with fire department personnel on-board. Flight-For-Life was called to the scene but did not take any patients, as the driver of the Jeep Wrangler was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tim Olk was at the scene and submitted a few quick images.

The Chicago Tribune has an article:

A man was killed when a school bus driver apparently ran a red light and collided with two SUVs near Wadsworth, but officials said the injuries among the dozens of elementary students on board were considered minor.

The accident happened around 8:05 a.m. at Route 173 and Kilbourne Road in Newport Township near Wadsworth as the bus was taking children to the Newport Elementary School, which holds grades kindergarten through fifth grade, officials said.

The bus “may have been late on the light” as it traveled west on Route 173 and struck a Jeep Wrangler headed south on Kilbourne, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said, citing witness accounts. “Close to a T-bone.” A Jeep Cherokee at the intersection was also “hit very hard,” he said.

The driver of the Wrangler was killed. Officials described the injured children as “walking wounded.”

The children were out of the bus when paramedics arrived. Twenty-three were determined to be code green, or good to fair condition, officials said. They were put on another bus with two paramedics on board and two ambulances as escorts on its way to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville.

Another 12 students were sent to hospitals by ambulance.

Twenty-three of the children were taken by another school bus to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with two paramedics on board and two ambulances following.

Twelve other children were taken by ambulance to other hospitals, along with two people from the Jeep Cherokee.

Dr. Charles Nozicka, medical director for the pediatric ER at Advocate Condell, said around noon that all but one child has been released. The last child is being held for further observation; he said it’s not clear yet if the child will remain hospitalized overnight.

The Tribune article is HERE with a video segment that includes helicopter images of the scene.
