Garage fire in Mt Prospect 1-23-12

The Mount Prospect Fire Department handled a fire several weeks ago in an attached garage at 133 Gregory in unincorporated Cook County.

Drew Smith provided the following description:

Two story house set back from the road about 150 feet.

Fire in the garage which communicated into a wall adjoining the house.

Garage contained a work shop with a large amount of tools, machinery and welding tanks.

(Glenview) E8 used a 2&1/2 inch line to knock down the fire.  It was a stubborn fire due to the garage storage.

A second line went into the house to check for fire spread.

The interior house wall adjoining the garage was opened as was the ceiling of the first floor near that wall and some additional fire was located then extinguished.

GV E8 was apparently first on the scene followed by MP E14 and Tower 13. I believe GV is part of the code 3 in that area along with PH A9.

Code 4 companies included myself, PH E39, DP battalion, and DP Truck 81.

Tim Olk, has been playing catch-up lately while he tries to get up-to-date with posting all the images that he’s shot. He recently submitted a few images from the scene on Gregory.

Drew provided some history on the area where the fire occurred:

Gregory is part of unincorporated Forest River.  Forest River subdivision has a fire district that has contracted with MP since 1970.  Before then, Forest River had their own FD.  The old MPFD Station 14 was the forest river station.  I’ve attached an old FRFD photo.

Several storm related fires

Lighting from the recent heavy thunderstorm activity was blamed for several area suburban fires. Glencoe, Deerfield, Mt. Prospect, Elgin, and Naperville all had fires during the overnight storms. Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune articles describe the fires.

Two house fires, in Glencoe and Deerfield, early Saturday morning appeared to be caused by lightning strikes from the heavy thunderstorms that passed through the Chicago area Saturday morning, and a third blaze at a Mt. Prospect apartment complex could also be lightning-related.

The Glencoe home in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue was a “total loss” …

…  a Saturday morning fire that forced a Deerfield family from its home and resulted in one firefighter being hospitalized. The injured firefighter suffered chest pains and was taken to Highland Park Hospital and was in good condition … The Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District got a call about 2:01 a.m., arrived at the scene about three minutes later and had the fire out soon thereafter.

The Mt. Prospect fire, which drew firefighters from 16 different departments, was at the Colonial Green apartments, a 39-unit structure at 2024 W. Algonquin Road. The fire destroyed the attic and part of the third floor, (Mt. Prospect Fire Chief John) Malcolm said. All 75 of the building’s occupants got out of the building ..

Lightning also struck the steeple at Vineyard Christian Church, 200 Division St., in Elgin, Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Elgin Fire Department.

A lightning strike spawned by a severe thunderstorm started a fire that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a Naperville home but injured no one …

The compete articles can be found HERE and HERE which cover these fires in more detail.

3rd Alarm in Lake Zurich on 6-20-11

Lake Zurich Fire Department house fire Brandon Road Kildeer

The 3rd Alarm in Lake Zurich's district originated in this attached garage. Larry Shapiro photo

The homeowner at 21396 Brandon Road in Kildeer called the fire department this evening shortly after 6PM to report a fire in the attached three-car garage. Fire protection is provided by the Lake Zurich Fire Department who responded with three engines and a truck. Long Grove responded auto-aid with a 3,000-gallon tanker since this neighborhood is without hydrants. The header could be seen as units went en-route and the alarm was filled out for the working fire. Upon arrival, companies were met with 20-foot flames from the garage which contained two cars. The alarm was quickly elevated to a MABAS Box Alarm and then a 2nd Alarm was requested within minutes. Lake Zurich Engine 4 setup at the base of the driveway after the tower ladder was backed into the driveway.

The bulk of the fire was contained to the garage area with some extension into the house and the attic area.

A skid-load and a 2 1/2 were pulled from Engine 4 which had 1,000 gallons of tank water that was immediately supplemented by 3,000 gallons from Long Grove Tanker 55. As these lines went to work, Lake Zurich Engine 3 laid 900 feet of 5″ down the road where they took an in-line position. Lake Zurich Engine 2 laid out an additional 700 feet of 5″ to the end of the street where they were met by Barrington Tanker 361 who setup their portable tank. The in-line operation was completed before companies ran out of water.

Prospect Heights Box Alarm 5-24-11

Prospect Heights house fire Schoenbeck 5-24-11

Prospect Heights firefighters use hand lines to attack a house fire Tuesday afternoon on Schoenbeck Road, Larry Shapiro photo

The Prospect Heights Fire Department received a call reporting fire in an attached garage around 2:30PM this afternoon. When the first unit arrived at 410 N. Schoenbeck Road, they reported heavy fire in the garage which was communicating to the two-story house. This part of Prospect Heights’ district is without hydrants, so the initial response brings their 3,000-gallon tanker along with their two engines, a battalion chief, and an ambulance. Also on the Code 3 response, they get an engine from Wheeling, an ambulance from Mt. Prospect, and a second tanker from Long Grove.

The fire was immediately upgraded to a Code 4 for the confirmed fire which brought an engine from Mt. Prospect, the tower ladder from Prospect Heights, a third tanker from Palatine Rural, an ambulance from Northbrook, a squad from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, a tower ladder from Northbrook, and chief officers from Wheeling and Long Grove.

As the fire progressed into the house, the alarm was further upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm which brought a tower ladder from Buffalo Grove, a squad from Deerfield, a truck from Northfield (which replaced a truck from Niles which was not available), a RIT chief and engine from North Maine, engines from Palatine, Arlington Heights, and Des Plaines, an ambulance from Elk Grove Township, chief officers from Glenview and Northbrook plus the MESS Canteen.

Prospect Heights Engine 9, the first due engine, went through their 750-gallon tank plus the 3,000 gallons carried by Tanker 9. Long Grove Tanker 55 also carries 3,000 gallons, all of which were used just prior to the establishment of a secure water supply that required 2,500 feet of 5″ hose.

The occupants of the house were able to get out, but evidently the family dog perished.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were both at the scene and submitted several images.

Mount Prospect/Des Plaines train accident 5-13-11

Mount Prospect Des Plaines Metra train accident 5-13-11

Mount Prospect and Des Plaines Fire Departments were notified of a Metra Train colliding with a dump truck this morning at the Mt. Prospect Road crossing at Northwest Highway. The collision occurred in Mt. Prospect and the ensuing partial derailment and fire was 1/4 mile further down the line in Des Plaines. Both departments setup a unified command to coordinate the emergency response to the incident. The truck driver was killed at the scene and multiple train passengers were transported to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries though none were critical. An EMS Box Alarm was requested and as the number of passengers with medical complaints grew, the alarm was upgraded to a 3rd Alarm and then to a 5th Alarm. In addition, a PACE bus was called to the scene to assist with transporting a group of patients that were triaged with a status of ‘green‘. Ambulances from Divisions 1, 3, and 20 responded to assist at the scene.

Mount Prospect Des Plaines Metra train accident 5-13-11

The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE which states;

All the train cars remained upright but at least 29 passengers were taken to hospitals and 10 others were treated on the scene. Officials said none of the injuries aboard the train appeared life-threatening, though the engineer was listed in critical condition.

The train, No. 636, was headed inbound from Harvard when it hit the truck on the crossing at about 8:40 a.m. at Seger near the Cumberland station in Mount Prospect, said Michael Gillis, a spokesman for Metra.

The truck driver was identified as Kazimierz Karasek, 59, from Prospect Heights.  Karasek, had been cited for more than 50 traffic violations, including a DUI, since 1986.

The truck was carrying load of concrete and was headed northwest on Northwest Highway, police said. It turned left onto Mount Prospect Road and through the crossing, Wagner said, adding that the gates were down and the signals were working.

The front train car came to rest roughly 200 yards east of Mount Prospect road, a gash slicing the metal above the lower row of windows.

Union Pacific spokesman Wes Lujan said the gates at the crossing were “operating as designed.”

“We believe that he drove around the gates,” Lujan said at a news conference.

He said crossing design is an “issue” because of Northwest Highway’s diagonal slant, but he added,  “There’s no reason to go around (the gates).”

A similar accident involving the same kind of truck happened almost 10 years ago at the Mount Prospect Road and Northwest Highway intersection, according to Des Plaines fire officials.

In today’s accident, Wagner said the driver would have disregarded a “No Left Turn” sign, in addition to the gates and crossing lights. The driver had to cross into the northbound lanes of Mount Prospect Road to get around the northern gate, he said. That left the cab squarely on the tracks as the train blew through the intersection, and the trailer and cab bent like a jacknife, with the trailer hitting the train cars.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene and submitted several images.

The Palatine Fire Department was called shortly after noon this afternoon for a reported car in a pond on the Harper College campus. Companies arrived to find only the roof visible of a submerged car with the passenger door open. Divers entered the water and found a woman in the car. She was removed and transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where she was later pronounced dead. The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE and the Daily Herald has one HERE.

Fire department divers from Palatine, Hoffman Estates, and Schaumburg searched the area for over an hour in the event that there were additional occupants in the car when it entered the water. Elk Grove, Arlington Heights, and Mt. Prospect divers were also on-scene in the event that more personnel were needed. After assisting the police with measurements for their investigation, divers hooked the car so that it could be winched from the water.

Apartment fire in Arlington Heights 1-19-11

Arlington Heights firefighters were called to 2150 S. Goebberts Road on Wednesday afternoon for a report of smoke in the hallway of a two-story apartment building measuring roughly 45×200. While en-route to the scene, the police department reported black smoke coming from one of the units, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire). Although the first arriving unit (Arlington Heights Engine 3) reported nothing visible from the direction that they came in, they found smoke upon entering the building and pulled a pre-connect. Mt. Prospect Engine 12 arrived next and assisted with securing a supply line before entering the building. The fire was contained to one unit and extinguished quickly.

Larry Shapiro arrived at the tail end of the suppression efforts and submitted a few images. Several more can be seen in a gallery HERE.
