York Center FPD is added

The York Center Fire Protection District in MABAS Division 12 covers 5 square miles which includes unincorporated Villa Park, unincorporated Lombard, unincorporated Oak Brook, York Center, and parts of Oak Brook Terrace. They operate out of one station with 2 full-time and 68 part-time personnel.

The York Center apparatus includes an E-ONE Hush pumper with a rear mounted engine, a Pierce pumper, a Pierce heavy rescue, Medtec ambulances, and a US Tanker built on a Freightliner M2112 chassis.

The entire York Center fleet used to be white and lime green. This 1993 E-ONE rear engine HUSH has an enclosed top-mounted operator's console protected by the extended vista cab. There is a 1,500-GPM pump and a 750-gallon water tank. This engine is still in with the department but the green has been replaced with red. Larry Shapiro collection

Another department in MABAS Division 12 has been added to the web site. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District operates out of one station and covers a district of 2.5 square miles with a combination of full-time and part-time personnel. This station is packed with apparatus. They have two engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and a pickup. As mentioned in previous posts, they just put a brand new Spartan/Marion engine into service. This unit represents a transition for the department to black over red rigs from white over red. The other engine and tower ladder are both E-ONE units and the ambulances were built by Medtec.

Chicago is well known as the birthplace for the Snorkel’s use in the fire service, and the entire Chicago metropolitan area was a mecca for Snorkels. Units could be found with every boom length that was offered and built by several different body builders. Prior to purchasing the 95′ tower ladder from E-ONE in 1991, this department had an unusual 85′ Snorkel on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This was one of the only Snorkels in the area that was not built on a C-Series chassis from Ford, a cab-over International, or on a custom fire truck chassis.

Beach Park Fire Protection District decal

Another Lake County, MABAS Division 4 department has been added to the site. Formerly known as the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District, The Beach Park Fire Department covers roughly 14 square miles in northeast Lake County which includes unincorporated areas of the county as well as Beach Park. They do not though currently provide coverage for the entire town of Beach Park as the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department has responsibility for a portion of the town.

In the last months of 2002, there were plenty of positive changes in the fire protection services for our village. Formerly known as the “Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District”, the name was officially changed to the “Beach Park Fire Department” (BPFD) last November to better define the department’s capabilities and service areas.

Beach Park has a mixture of apparatus in the fleet including Alexis, Pierce, Seagrave, Medtec, and Osage. The newest rig is Engine 1222 which is a 2008 Seagrave Maurauder II engine. Currently, Beach Park Engine 1212, a 2002 HME/Alexis engine is undergoing work at Alexis Fire Apparatus.

In recent Beach Park FD news, they have opened a second station at 13110 W. Major Avenue in Beach Park. This interesting station originated as an existing house with an attached garage. The garage was modified as a lobby and office area and a two-bay addition was then added for the apparatus. At the present time, this station has a crew of two or three which are a jump company, staffing either the engine or ambulance based on the nature of a request for service.

North Chicago is on the site

In northern Lake County, the North Chicago Fire Department runs a fleet of Pierce and Medtec units out of two stations. Their 8 square mile district borders the Great Lakes Naval Training Center on two sides. Their newest piece of apparatus is an 85′ tower ladder from Pierce which replaced a 1977 Hendrickson 1871-S/Pierce/LTI 85′ tower ladder. North Chicago is expecting another new Pierce in January. This will be a Pierce custom Contender engine to replace a 1986 Pierce Dash engine with open jump seats.

At North Chicago Station 2 on Buckley Road is their newest ambulance. Purchased in 2009, this was a Medtec demonstrator that was built in 2002. It arrived with blue decals which was the design that Medtec had created so the unit would appeal to a traditional rescue squad. The blue was subsequently removed and replaced with red graphics. This explains why this ambulance design is different looking than the other North Chicago ambulances.

Romeoville is on the site

The three stations representing the Romeoville Fire Department in Will County (MABAS Division 10) have been added to the site. Hank, Karl & Larry submitted the images.

This is a Pierce department with four engines, a tower ladder and a heavy rescue. In addition they run Medtec and Horton Type I medic units. Also, like many departments, they now have a Polaris ATV in their inventory. Romeoville Fire Department Station 3

In addition to the fire department, the Village of Romeoville has an Emergency Management Agency (REMA) with an impressive fleet of 16 pieces of equipment which includes three light rescue squads, two of which have Command Light towers. They have a mobile command unit, a rehab unit, off-road units and seven marked sedans to transport their staff.

First Division 27 department is posted

Our first post in Division 27 is the Beecher Fire Protection District. They operate with 42 part-time firefighters out of one station and are responsible for a coverage area of 56 square miles! They operate two ambulances, one engine, one pumper/tanker, a quint with a 75′ aluminum ladder and a brush rig. Their suppression equipment is Pierce and their ambulances are Medtec and Road Resue. In 2009 they replaced engine 406 and tanker 410 with a Pierce Arrow XT 2500-gallon pumper tanker.

Beecher has interesting decals on each of the suppression rigs that are customized per piece.

Hebron-Alden-Greenwood FPD is on the site

In McHenry County Division 5, the two stations of the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District have been added to the site although two apparatus images are missing. They run with four commercial engines utilizing Ford and Freightliner chassis. They have two brush rigs and a 3,500-gallon tanker which formerly saw service in Woodstock. According to their website, the district completed their first year of Advanced Life Support service in February of this year. They have two Type III Medtec ambulances.

Naperville reassignments …. requires a scorecard

Several months ago we posted the Naperville Fire Department to the site. Several photographers visited the department on separate occasions to document the new equipment and the placement of companies in each station. Several of the rigs had been moved and reassigned since they were photographed a year or so ago but everything was brought up-to-date for the posting with the help of Naperville Lt. Andy Hilk.

Well, we had received information that the Naperville FD was not yet done moving companies and that changes were coming. Bill Friedrich submitted the following information regarding reassignments throughout the stations.

Medic 9 is out of service
Medic 1 is now using the 2007 IHC/Medtec that was previously Medic 9
Squad 1 (1997 E-ONE) has moved back to Station 8 and is now Squad 8 … again
Engine 8’s 2008 Crimson rig is back at Station 1 as Engine 1
The 2009 Crimson quint from Truck 10 is now running as Truck 5
The 2005 E-ONE tower ladder which was Truck 5 is now a spare
The 1994 E-ONE tower ladder without a pump that was in reserve has now been decommissioned and will likely be sold
Engine 10 is now using a 2005 E-ONE Typhoon
The TRT trailer is moving to Station 10

Squad 8 when it was moved to Station 1 ... prior to being renumbered.

Lockport updates

Lockport Lt. John Matthews keeps us current and up-to-date with his department. He recently sent us pictures of Lockport‘s new 2010 IHC/Medtec ambulance at station1 and the new brush unit as well. John informs us that the old ambulance 1 has become reserve ambulance 1 now at station6, and the previous reserve unit is gone.

Troy FPD is added to Division 15

Another fire department has been added to the site thanks to the diligence of Karl Klotz … although we’re still awaiting images of the stations. Nonetheless, the Troy Fire Protection District is now on the site showing apparatus from both stations. Troy recently opened a new headquarters station and began ordering apparatus in a new color scheme. As recently as their 2008 IHC/Medtec ambulance and 2008 Kenworth/Pierce Contender tanker, all of their apparatus was lime green, . They now have four units that are painted black over a very deep red. Two new Pierce Arrow XT engines are in service as well as a Ford/Medtec ambulance and a brush unit on a four-door Ford pickup.
