Abbott Labs FD is added

Abbot Labs Fire Department Lake County ILAlthough the Abbott Labs Fire Department in Lake County (MABAS Division 4) runs out of two locations, they are responsible for roughly 37 facilities in Lake County. The department consists of 5 career personnel and 83 plant employees that are trained to respond in the event of an emergency. The Abbott Labs Fire Department shares space within Libertyville Station 3 (which is Abbott Labs Station 1) that is located at 13415 Atkinson Road, directly adjacent to the Abbott Park campus. Station 2 for Abbott is within the North Chicago campus along the lake front roughly 6 miles from the headquarters station.

This fire department has one engine and several support pieces which consist of vans and pickups. There is a new squad unit being outfitted at Station 1 which should go into service soon. It is a used Step-Van that will have equipment to support confined space and haz mat operations in addition to breathing air.

There is a small historic photo gallery for this department which includes their current engine on-scene at an extra alarm fire in Winthrop Harbor several years ago.

Grayslake breaks ground for new station

The Grayslake Fire Protection District in MABAS Division 4 had a ground breaking ceremony this week at the site of what will be their Station 3 at 22405 Peterson Road and Route 60.

Construction of the new 10,600-square-foot station is scheduled to begin in March and be completed by September 2011.

Having the new fire station be located in the far southern portion of the district will significantly shorten response times …

Responding from Fire Station 1 in downtown Grayslake, or Fire Station 2 near the College of Lake County, can be hampered by train crossings and distance.

The third fire station is a response to Grayslake’s growth in recent years, he said in a statement.

The complete article can be found HERE from the Grayslake Patch.

Wauconda Box Alarm 1-22-11

The Wauconda Fire Department in MABAS Division 4 was called to the scene of a single-family house fire shortly after 1PM today at 1116 Madison Avenue. Companies found heavy fire in the garage of the structure that was communicating to the house and attic area. They upgraded the response to a MABAS Box Alarm bringing mutual aid from several departments. There was no one home at the time of the fire and though the garage sustained heavy damage to the roof and the vehicle parked inside was destroyed, damage to the main house was limited to the area directly behind the two-story garage.

Companies assisting at the fire were from Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove.

Larry Shapiro took in the fire, but arrived after it was knocked down. Here are several images from the scene.

Also, there was no second floor above the garage floor even though there was a fair sized window installed in the wall as is visible in this street image from Google Maps.

New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD

Bill Friedrich informs us that the Newport FPD in Lake County has purchased a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury, walk-in, heavy rescue with a mid-ship mounted, 8-ton, 33-foot, National Crane from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, MD. The unit is not yet in Illinois, but reportedly will be soon. Lutherville’s apparatus are painted white with gold striping and a black band along the bottom. Lutherville replaced this squad in 2008 with a Pierce Velocity, tandem axle, walk-around, heavy rescue with a 10-ton National Crane.

Buffalo Grove TRT response

A car veered out of control sometime after 1AM this morning and hit the Willow Grove School at 777 Checker Drive in Buffalo Grove. The car came to rest after displacing a steel support at the corner of the school offices. Buffalo Grove requested assistance from the MABAS Division 4 & 5 Technical Rescue Team which brought equipment and technicians from across Lake County. After the car was removed, firefighters cleared the debris and constructed a two-post vertical shore to provide support to the overhead beam.

New truck for Lincolnshire-Riverwoods

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD in MABAS Division 4 is ordering a new aerial to replace Truck 53, a 1996 Seagrave 100′ single axle rear mount with a 1.500-GPM pump and 500-gallon tank.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Seagrave rear mount aerial

The new truck will be a 105′, Pierce rear mount aerial ladder, with a 1,500-GPM pump, and 500-gallon water tank, on an Arrow XT chassis with seating for six. Unlike the Seagrave, the new unit will feature a tandem rear axle. There is a possibility that the new truck will have a black roof with a gray ladder, otherwise it will have a white roof and white ladder similar to the Seagrave.

Lake Zurich has been added to the site

Lake Zurich Fire Department patchLake Zurich has now been added to the departments in MABAS Division 4. They have four stations of which one is in Deer Park and another is in North Barrington. This is a 100% Pierce department for suppression apparatus with four Saber engines, a Dash tower ladder, and a squad with a commercial IHC 4400 chassis. The ambulances are a mixture of Road Rescue and Medtec Type I units on IHC chassis.

The four engines are virtually identical though they span being built between 1997-2002. All but one carry 1,000 gallons of water and have foam tanks. The downtown engine has 750 gallons of water on board.

Grayslake has been added to MABAS Division 4

The Grayslake Fire Protection District covers 25 square miles in the heart of Lake County. They currently run out of two stations and expect to break ground for Station 3 in the spring of 2011. The new station will be on Peterson Road just east of Route 60. Grayslake has a combination of full-time, part-time and contract personnel. Although their truck and two engines are from Pierce, the newest engine is a 2009 Seagrave Maurauder II top-mount which has been featured HERE, and HERE.
