The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD requested a Haz mat Box Alarm Thursday evening (5/28/15) at the Lincolnshire Marriott Hotel for a chemical reaction.
Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
A Lincolnshire Marriott employee accidentally mixed two chemicals at the resort’s indoor pool early Thursday night, prompting hazardous materials crews to evacuate and ventilate the area.
The employee was supposed to pour muriatic acid into a large drum of water but instead, poured it in another drum containing a chemical similar to bleach, Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Battalion Chief Duane Christensen said. Realizing the mistake, the employee quickly shut and locked a door leading into the hotel’s first floor and opened a second door to let the gas vent outside, Christensen said.
The employee got a whiff of the chemical reaction and was treated at the resort by paramedics as a precaution after he began coughing. The mixture could have caused difficulty breathing for hotel guests if the employee hadn’t secured the area, said Christensen, crediting his prompt actions. No other symptoms or injuries were reported.
[Firefighters] removed the container of chemicals to a safe location … [and a] cleanup company was [called] to properly dispose of the container.

An ammonia leak in Itasca led to the evacuation of buildings downwind of the ITW building, located at 1349 Bryn Mawr in the northwestern suburb.
Employees noticed the leaking tank and called officials at 9:22 a.m. HAZMAT crews responded.
There are no reports of injuries or illness. The evacuated buildings are all businesses, not residential, officials said.
Tim Olk submitted images from the scene.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD received a call just after 9AM on Tuesday from the Lincolnshire Marriott Hotel reporting some type of chemical accident with several employees not feeling well. First arriving units noted a chemical smell and conducted a preliminary investigation as the alarm was upgraded to bring area hazardous materials (haz mat) techs to the scene from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, and Countryside departments.
No employees were transported to the hospital, and after learning the specific data about what were reported to be various cleaning products, an entry team entered the hotel’s service area and collected the product into two storage containers which were sealed for removal by a licensed waste hauler.
All firefighters and equipment that entered the hot zone were then decontaminated which brought the incident to a close.
Larry Shapiro submitted several images from the scene.
