Fatal fire in Chicago, 1-6-21

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

A 6-year-old boy died in a fire Wednesday night in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood. A neighbor noticed the blaze in the Far South Side row house in the 13000 block of South Evans Avenue about 9:45 p.m. and rescued four children before firefighters arrived. But the neighbor was unable to enter the second-floor bedroom where the fire started.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and searched the room’s top bunkbed, where they found the 6-year-old unresponsive. The 6-year-old was rushed from the home  to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The fire appeared to begin in the bunkbed where the child was found. But it’s still unclear what caused the fire.

The boy’s four siblings — ages 1, 4, 5, and 13 — were uninjured, according to police, who said the children were left home without adults. The house had working smoke detectors.

State welfare officials are investigating the child’s death.  They had prior contact with the boy’s family.

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

Two seniors were found dead Thanksgiving Day night in a fire in the Old Irving Park neighborhood. Officials said the fire was caused by careless use of smoking materials, and an oxygen tank in the home helped fuel the blaze.

The fire department said a still-and-box alarm was called for the fire the two-and-a-half-story frame house at 4217 N. Kildare Ave. The house was fully engulfed by fire.

The bodies of 85-year-old Robert Szalacha and 76-year-old Carol Szalacha were found at the scene around 9:21 p.m. and were pronounced dead by fire department personnel. An autopsy on Friday determined Robert Szalacha died of carbon monoxide poisoning and thermal injuries, and Carol Szalacha died of thermal injuries and smoke inhalation.

Police said a 61-year-old woman was also in the house at the time of the fire, but refused treatment.

Flames were through the roof forcing firefighters into a defensive attack. The fire was extinguished at about 11:20 p.m.
