Long Grove rollover with entrapment 9-9-13

This from Larry Shapiro:

Long Grove firefighters were called to the scene of a tractor-trailer rollover on the ramp from northbound I53 to westbound Lake Cook Road early this afternoon. This is the site of many truck accidents annually. Arriving with Long Grove companies was Buffalo Grove Tower 25. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and needed to be extricated.

After the driver was transported to the hospital, fire units stood by for a towing and recovery company tasked with uprighting and removing the truck and trailer.

Skokie responds to man trapped under a car

Jeff Rudolph submitted images from a response in Skokie this week and provided the following description:

08/30/11 – 1500hrs; 7700 blk. of Kilbourn
Came in as a report of a child pinned under a vehicle. Skokie dispatched a full extrication assignment of 2 engines, a truck, the squad, an ambulance, and B/C. On arrival, Engine 16 determined it was not in fact a child, but an adult male ( who was slightly intoxicated ) . He had jacked up one side of his car and slid under to make some repairs to his exhaust. He got himself wedged under the exhaust, and his buddy ( who was slightly intoxicated ) attempted to help, but only made matters worse. When Squad 18 arrived, they chocked the vehicle and used airbags to lift it off of him. He slid out with only some minor abrasions, did not want transport, and his exhaust was still in need of repair.

Elmhurst rollover MVA 7-6-11

Elmhurst firefighters responded this morning to a single vehicle MVA on the northbound RT 83 ramp to eastbound I290. They arrived to find a tractor-trailer that had rolled onto one side trapping the driver inside the cab. When the truck rolled, the trailer struck a light pole which buckled in the middle spilling part of the load of plastic pellets. Elmhurst companies responded with two medic units, a battalion chief, an engine, a tower ladder and the heavy rescue unit. The extrication took over 45 minutes and the incident commander requested a medivac to transport the patient. Lifestar Chicago, formerly Loyola Lifestar, transported the patient after the extrication was completed.

Larry Shapiro was in the area and submitted several images from the scene.

Buffalo Grove EMS Box Alarm 5-11-11

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a reported four-car motor vehicle accident with airbag deployment before noon today. The accident occurred on Milwaukee Avenue at Busch Parkway. As it is near the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District response area, they received the call as well. When units arrived on the scene, they had six patients among three cars, one of which had suffered extensive damage. Both departments worked to assist patients which included extricating two from a late model Cadillac. An EMS Box Alarm was requested which brought ambulances from Wheeling, Lake Zurich, Deerfield, Mundelein, and Lake Forest in addition to the Buffalo Grove and Lincolnshire ambulances that were already at the scene.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were both at the scene, but Tim arrived prior to the first tool going to work. Both submitted images and Tim has a complete gallery HERE and Larry has a gallery HERE.

CTA Train vs car

Last weekend, Tim Olk was on the scene of a collision between a CTA Brown Line train and an SUV at 4600 N. Kedzie, in Chicago. Tim arrived in time to photograph the extrication. The driver of the car sustained serious injuries and the train derailed as a result of the collision.

Glenview Engine 8

Glenview engine 8 Pierce Arrow XT

The new Pierce Arrow XT engine that was assigned to Glenview Engine 8 earlier this year represents several changes from the earlier apparatus for Engine 6 and 7. The heavier Arrow XT cab/chassis is the first noticeable change as compared to the Enforcer models purchased previously. The Arrow XT was also ordered with a heavy steel bumper instead of the chrome bumpers on the others. The next change is in the body design. Engine 8 has larger body with deeper ‘rescue-style’ compartments. The first compartment has a slide-out tool board, the rear compartment has a complete compliment of hydraulic extrication tools and there are ‘coffin-style’ compartments assessable from the top of the body which house the cord reels for the hydraulic tools and haz-mat supplies. Engine 8 is the first response haz-mat unit in town and along with truck 14 is part of the extrication response. Engines 6, 7, and 13 have ‘combi-tools’ for minor pin-ins but only Engine 8 and the truck have the full array of tools.

Glenview is said to be in the preliminary stages of ordering two additional engines, one of which will have the standard engine body while the second will replicate Engine 8. This ‘rescue-style’ engine though will not be setup for haz-mat but instead will carry supplies for technical rescue.

Buffalo Grove put their new Ferrara engine into service just after lunch today and within 3 hours it responded on two medical runs and a car into a building that required extrication.  Reports came in to the police that a car had driven into the Rainbow Cleaners at 482 Half Day Road (at Buffalo Grove Road). When police arrived they reported three injuries including the driver who was unable to get out of the car. Firefighters removed the roof of the Lexus inside the cleaners before pulling out the driver who did not appear to be seriously injured. The other victims signed releases and were not transported.
