04/24/13  1937 Hartrey 2nd alarm.
One police officer was treated for smoke inhalation after attempting to make entry into a 2 story home burning on Evanston’s west side. Heat and smoke drove him out, and first in crews where able to make entry and remove one victim. The victim would succumb from his injuries. Command elevated the alarm to a MABAS 2nd alarm. Fire heavily damaged the building of origin and spread to the exterior of the B side exposure house.

This from the Chicago Tribune:

A man died this evening after suffering second- and third-degree burns in a fire at an Evanston home this afternoon, officials said.

The man, believed to be in his mid-60s, died after being taken to Evanston Hospital for treatment of second- and third-degree burns following the fire at a home in the 1900 block of Hartrey Avenue, an Evanston Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire started about 5:15 p.m., and when firefighters arrived they found the man on the first floor of the single-family frame home, where the bulk of the fire was contained, the spokesman said.

The fire spread up to the home’s second floor, but did not do much damage there, and also damaged the siding of a nearby house, the spokesman said.

Evanston firefighters had the fire under control before 6 p.m. Crews from eight other North Shore suburbs assisted in fighting the fire.

Two northside fires with injuries

It was a busy night in the northern suburbs.

The Evanston Fire Department struck a box alarm for fire in a three-story apartment building in the 700 block of Noyes. The CBS Chicago reports:

Firefighters were called to the 700 block of Noyes Street about 11:24 p.m. and quickly extinguished “heavy” flames in a second-floor apartment, according to a release from the Evanston Fire Department.

A 56-year-old man was rescued from the apartment, suffering from first and second degree burns, as well as smoke inhalation, the release stated. The man was taken to Evanston NorthShore Hospital in critical condition, according to the release.

Early this morning Wilmette firefighters pulled a resident from a burning house on Valley View Drive. The Chicago Tribune reports:

A Wilmette house fire that left a woman critically injured early this morning may have been started by a humidifier plugged into the bedroom wall, Fire Chief Jim Dominik said.

At about 1:15 a.m., Wilmette firefighters were called to a home in the 200 block of Valley View Drive and found the inside of the home fully involved with fire, Dominik said. The smoke was “thick and black, visibility was zero,” Dominik said.

Firefighters found the only resident of the house, a woman in her 60s, unconscious and in critical condition. After emergency treatment at the scene, she was transported to Skokie Hospital, where she was stabilized and then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

“The personnel first on the scene did a great job of locating and getting the victim out of the house,” Dominik said.

Evanston Box Alarm 8-25-11

The Evanston Fire Department received multiple calls for smoke in the area of Callan Avenue and Howard Street around 7PM on Thursday. The dispatchers upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 after receiving numerous calls reporting heavy fire in a building in the 100 block of Callan Avenue with people trapped. Evanston Engine 22 was the first to arrive at the three-story, brick, courtyard building and found heavy fire occupying the rear porches from the ground floor to the top. The officer upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm immediately.

Searches for trapped occupants were negative and the fire was contained quickly, but not before it extended into second and third floor units.

Evanston Now has an article HERE which states:

Sixteen residents were left homeless after fire broke out about 7 p.m. Thursday in a apartment building at 116 Callan Ave. in Evanston.

Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says the first fire companies to arrive found flames coming from second and third floor balconies at the rear of the building.

He says a mutual aid box alarm was sounded, bringing all Evanston fire units and a ladder truck from Skokie to the scene.

Klaiber says all residents of the five occupied apartments in the building managed to escape the building on their own. But the fire spread to second and third floor units in the building, causing extensive damage.

One elderly female occupant was treated on the scene for shortness of breath but was not transported. No firefighters were injured.

The fire was extinguished and struck at about 8 p.m. The chief says the cause is still under investigation.

Police victim’s assistance and American Red Cross workers were on the scene to find temporary housing for the building’s residents.

Tim Olk arrived after a quick knock down by Evanston companies and submitted several images from the scene.

New ambulance for Evanston

Northwestern University has donated roughly $253,000 to purchase a new ambulance for the Evanston Fire & Life Safety Department. An announcement posted this week can be found HERE on the City of Evanston website.

Northwestern University will donate a new ambulance to the City of Evanston, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl announced today.

“We appreciate very much the continued support of Northwestern University for our fire and life safety department,” Mayor Tisdahl said. “Northwestern University is a wonderful part of our community, and we are grateful to receive this generous donation.”

The new ambulance, which will be an advanced life support transport unit, will go into frontline service this fall, as soon as the licensing process is completed,” said Greg Klaiber, Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services Chief. “The new ambulance will replace a current unit that the city will then keep in reserve for use as needed. The new ambulance includes a power cot, power oxygen lift and a heart monitor/defibrillator”

In 2009 Northwestern donated $550,000 to the City for the purchase of a new fire engine, which went into service the following year.
