The Coal City Fire Protection District is proud to announce the appointment of its first fire chaplain, Rev. Brad Shumaker, pastor of the Coal City United Methodist Church since 2015.
The fire chaplain provides support for the firefighters. A chaplain is the psychological caretaker within the organization.
Fire/EMS personnel see and manage some horrific events and at times that can take a toll on an individual. Firefighter suicides are a huge concern in the fire service. Last year 130 members took their own lives in the fire service/EMS community in the United States, according to a news release from the Coal City Fire Protection District.

Retired Coal City Police Chief and Coal City Fire Protection District Capt. Dennis Neary always wanted to have fun, watch the Chicago Cubs and make sure everyone around him was OK.
On Oct. 2 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Neary lost his battle with advanced stage lung cancer. He was 66.
Neary spent his life in public service. He started as a part-time member of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department before he was hired in 1972 as a full-time patrol officer in Coal City. After patrolling for several years Neary was named the police chief, a role he served in for the next 30 years.
Neary didn’t just serve as the chief of police though – his desire to help others also took him to the Coal City Fire Protection District, which he joined in 1978. He served as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, and retired in 2014 with the rank of captain.
Funeral services were held Friday at the First Baptist Church in Coal City.

Firefighters responded Tuesday to a commercial structure fire in Coal City. Coal City Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched about 11:09 a.m. to 35 S. Broadway St., according to Lt. Nick Doerfler who said there were three people treated on scene for minor injuries.
The building where the fire occurred houses a hair salon, and pool supply store with some vacant spaces on the ground floor, and apartments on the second floor. It was occupied when the blaze began on the second floor near the front of the structure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and likely will remain so for several weeks.
Richard Dean, who lived in the six-apartment building, said the fire started in the front of the building and spread to the back. Dean said his neighbors in told him they heard a boom and suddenly there was a fire.
Fighting the fire consumed most of Coal City’s water supply, Doerfler said, so agencies tapped into Braidwood’s supply through a well. The well water did not enter Coal City’s regular water supply.

The Menominee-Dunleith fire station was destroyed during strong storms Monday morning, June 22, 2015.
The roof collapsed on the building, walls and doors were crushed and vehicles inside the fire station were also damaged. The fire station is in East Dubuque, Illinois.
It was not yet clear whether the damaged vehicles might include a new fire truck the department reported receiving in June 2014.

Officials were unsure early Tuesday morning how many homes are damaged and how many people are displaced. Coal City High School had been opened for emergency evacuations but that was changed to Coal City Methodist Church, 6805 McArdle, after the high school lost power.
Coal City’s fire station received some damage. The fire district has created a Facebook page to spread information, Doerfler said, Coal City Area Tornado – Official.
Most of the damage was on the west end of Coal City, he said. There also were reports of damage in unincorporated areas between Morris and Coal City, Schroeder said.

Last year, Rikki, a 6-month-old German shepherd, was adopted from a rescue in Wisconsin. Now a year older, she’s working as a search-and-rescue dog for the Coal City Fire Protection District with her handler, Lt. Nick Doerfler. She has had more than 200 training hours to become a search-and-rescue dog and is undergoing additional training to become a cadaver dog.
“What brought it on was we had several drownings last year, and dogs had to be brought in to assist,” Doerfler said. “In addition to that, we have several children with autism in our area who have wandering tendencies. Rikki will be able to help find them.”
Doerfler said in her initial water training for human remains detection from a boat, she was able to alert to 1 millimeter of a scent that was 3 feet under water. He said a dog trained in water detection can pinpoint an area within a couple feet for each foot below the surface the body is. If a body is trapped 10 feet under water, the dog will give a 20-foot area to search with sonar or divers, narrowing the search on a large body of water.
As a MABAS 15 asset, she will be available to assist other fire protection districts as needed. Unlike the typical police dog, Rikki will not be used in any criminal cases.
Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said while police agencies in the area have tracking dogs, having another one available is a great idea. With no other agency in Grundy County having a cadaver dog, Rikki will be valuable to the county.
Rikki, like other working dogs, will work only for her handler and is not trained to bite or attack. Doerfler takes care of Rikki, and she goes home with him where she is part of the family. When he brought the idea to the fire district, he had no idea if officials would let the program move forward or if they would let him be the handler. But he felt it was something the area truly needed. The district not only agreed to buy the dog for $375, but also agreed to let Doerfler be her handler and train with her.
