This from Steve Redick:
Found an audio tape of the radio traffic from this job at 19th & Peoria that I made from a fire alarm office recording. I am also enclosing a link to the images from this job It really is amazing how much more advanced my tools and techniques have become since taking these. As I recall TL39 lost power with the basket in a precarious position and I have images of the members stretching an exposure line to protect the basket and ladder. I remember seeing this from the elevated portion of the Dan Ryan as I was enroute and seeing heavy flames from a square block area … what a site. Considering the massive amount of fire here there were few really good images to be had. Enjoy the history.Steve

This from Larry Shapiro:
After seeing the photos from Fleet Guy of the two 1985 E-ONE tower ladders that remain in the CFD spare pool, I thought I’d share an image of one when it was brand new. Assigned to Tower Ladder 39, this was on display in the Daley Center Plaza for Fire Prevention Week in 1985 before it was placed in service. E-238, E-4335 for this rig.

This from Steve Redick:
Early friday morning, 26th & Rockwell. Near as I could tell this was a pallet yard and loading dock complex. Access was poor and most of the fire was set way back from the street. Railroad tracks and other industrial complexes made access for apparatus difficult at best. Several in-line pumping operations were conducted. Photos were difficult to come by due to smoke conditions, local flooding, and access. Here’s a few images to view, and the rest are posted on my site alongSteve

This from Eric Haak:
Had a great opportunity to shoot the new Tower Ladder 39 at a still and box alarm this morning (5/7) at 59th and Carpenter. The fire was in a red x building and appeared to have started in back porches, which were fully involved when I arrived. Companies were defensive from the start.

Radio traffic from the 3-11 Alarm fire
This from Steve Redick:
This fire happened the evening of April 30, about 48th Place just west of Kedzie. Companies initially reported an auto fire adjacent to the building but shortly declared a working fire. This was, from what I could tell, a fire resistive structure with concrete floors. The fire involved mattresses and foam padding in a large area of the first floor. Weather conditions were poor … rainfall kept the smoke low and visibility to a minimum. Flash photos were pretty much impossible and both my camera and I got a thorough soaking. The new TL 39 and TL54 were both utilized with the buckets low to the ground to work their streams deep into the first floor. Multiversals and numerous handlines were also utilized. The attack lasted a few hours and cautious interior asessments were conducted in the later stages using TIC and search ropes.Steve Redick
Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
Two firefighters were hurt after an “incendiary and suspicious in nature” extra-alarm fire broke out at a mattress warehouse Saturday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
The fire started around 7:40 p.m. at the four-story warehouse near South Christiana Avenue and West 48th Place, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
The response to the blaze was raised to a 2-11 alarm about 8:30 p.m. and to a 3-11 alarm about 9 p.m.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries as a result of the fire. One of them was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, and the second firefighter was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Both are in good condition.
The blaze was struck out about 10:45 p.m. An investigation by the fire department determined the fire was suspicious and the Chicago Police Department will continue the investigation.
