Boone County Fire Protection District #2 news

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

Firefighters from Boone County worked to extinguish a trolley bus on fire on Interstate 90 near Belvidere on Wednesday night.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 firefighters were called to the scene around 11:06 p.m., near mile marker 27, and found heavy smoke coming from the vehicle, which became engulfed in flames along the side of the roadway.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, utilizing approximately 2,800 gallons of water from a tanker. There are no fire hydrants lining the interstate.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and managed to escape uninjured.

The fire is believed to have started in the rear of the vehicle, where the engine is located. The trolley bus was thought to be manufactured in the 2010s and is owned by a private company.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 in the news

Excerpts from wrex.com:

From May 19th to May 25th in 2024, National EMS Week is celebrated to honor EMTs and paramedics who respond to emergencies and perform life saving measure to members of the community. This is the 50th year that the U.S. is recognizing EMS Week.

Boone County Dist. #2 officially launched their ambulance service in August of 2023 after a referendum tax was passed, allowing them to bring on two ambulance units. To service their ambulances, they expanded and remodeled the EMS side of their building.

Right now, the department is staffed with 12 firefighters who are also cross trained to provide emergency medical services.

Along with the calls that are difficult, there are rewarding calls as well. They had three full CPR saves since August 2023.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 is ready to continue to serve the community with their new ambulance service, along with potentially expanding their fleet in the near future.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2

Excerpts from wrex.com:

The Boone County Fire Protection District #2 has responded to 155 calls so far this year, more than double the number of calls from last year.

Chief Brian Kunce said he’s trying to figure out why calls have spiked but knows it’s not because of the recent winter storms. A large majority of their calls historically are medical, something they are now investing in in just a few months.

The fire protection district is set to receive a second ambulance which they believe will make the increase in calls more manageable both for them and others in the area. The new ambulance is expected to be ready for operation on April 29th.

“With the accidents that we have out here, we’re always using at least two and there’s been times where every ambulance in the county has been tied up just with a traffic accident, so we’ve got to call mutual aid from Winnebago County, McHenry, or DeKalb,” Kunce said.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 news

From Boone County Fire Protection District #2:

When Boone Dist #2 responded to a possible vehicle fire, crews found out the vehicle had just overheated. The driver mentioned she was a door dash driver and had a bunch of groceries she was delivering when the car overheated. The delivery was nearby so our personnel loaded up the groceries and graciously delivered them. Instructions on the door said to leave them at the door. Your wish was our command. Delivered your groceries safe and sound.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 news (more)

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

Tuesday was Election Day in Illinois, and a referendum in Boone County affected Fire Protection District #2.

Voters were asked to approve buying and operating two fully-staffed ambulances. A “yes” would raise annual taxes to right around $130 a year for a $100,000 house.

It looks like voters gave the county the green light to make the purchase.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Chief Brian Kunce said that having a dedicated ambulance service to help in times of trouble will be a great thing for the community in many ways, including response times.

With the recent ambulance agreement no longer in place, this will give two vehicles that are committed to serving the taxpayers of the district. It also includes a 24/7 staffed service.

Kunce said this result shows that the community has a great understanding of who helps in times of trouble, and that residents are committed to helping as well.

“This wasn’t a want, it was a need for the community, because we were dealt this last-minute change when the previous ambulance service was sold,” Kunce said. “So, we have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time to get that message out, and now we are going to be able to provide this dedicated service to our community.”

Kunce said that it will take just under a year for District #2 to receive its first ambulance.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 news

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

Many people in Boone County could lose their ambulance service next year, and Fire District #2 has a plan, but it means more in taxes.

Boone County voters will decide on Tuesday if Boone County Fire Protection District #2 will get their ambulance service. The referendum is for two, full-staffed ambulances with 24/7 service. The cost is about $130 per year on a $100,000 house. The district had been using ambulance service through the hospital, but that contract is ending. The district will have to rely on surrounding communities for help if the referendum does not pass.

That the district will still use the help of other districts if needed, but does not want to rely on that for day-to-day calls.

Polls will open at 6 a.m. Tuesday and will close at 7 p.m.
