2-Alarm House fire near Libertyville, 6-8-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Libertyville Fire Department struck a 2nd Alarm for a house fire at 1121 Oak Spring Lane Monday evening (6/8/15) shortly after 8PM. First arriving companies had flames through the roof of a house undergoing renovations from a previous fire. The house is located at the end of a dead-end street with no hydrants. With the 2nd alarm, there were tenders from Grayslake, Wauconda, Countryside, Fox lake, lake Villa, Long Grove, Libertyville, Newport Township, and Antioch along with engines from Libertyville, Lake Bluff, Knollwood, Mundelein, Lake Forest, and Great Lakes. Squads on the scene were from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurney and the only truckwas from Libertyville.

They made quick work of knocking down the fire which was out when I arrived. Tim Olk arrived long before I did.

House fire in Arlington Heights, 2/20/15 (more)

Excerpts from the Daily Herald:

[a] house was unoccupied when fire broke out before midnight on Thursday, authorities said. … the homeowner …  returned to his house around 2 a.m. to see it up in flames.

Firefighters remained outside the house on the 800 block of North Kaspar Avenue throughout much of Friday, continually putting out hot spots as they flared up. By Friday night, firefighters said, fire operations ceased, and the building was torn down.

Without describing the contents, Arlington Heights Fire Department officials said a “high fire content load” inside the two-story, single-family home kept the fire burning long after the first firefighting crews arrived on scene about 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said fire was coming through the roof and first- and second-floor windows when they arrived. But firefighters were unable to make entry into the house due to the excessive flames and heat.

The below-zero overnight temperatures also presented a challenge for [firefighters], who were unable to use the nearest hydrant because it was frozen. After accessing a working hydrant some 300 feet away, firefighters … were able to contain the blaze without it spreading to nearby houses, officials said.

Working fire in Riverwoods, 5-11-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

Shortly before 11AM Sunday, a motorist reported a vehicle fire up against a garage at the corner of Riverwoods Road and half Day Road (Route 22) in Lincolnshire. Companies reported a dark header as they got on the road and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the confirmed fire that had spread to the attached garage and was threatening the home.

Deerfield-Bannockburn Engine 19 was first on the scene followed by Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engines 51 and 52. A quick attack with a 2 1/2″ line darkened much of the fire and additional lines were put to use effectively holding the fire to the garage.

Units at the scene were Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engines 51 & 52, Truck 53, Ambulances 52 & 53, Battalion 51, and Rehab 51 in addition to Deerfield-Bannockburn Engine 19, a Libertyville squad, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, an ambulance from Lake Zurich, and Lake Forest Battalion 42

I arrived after the fire had been knocked down.

Lisle-Woodridge FPD press release

Structure Fire, 13-16 Bittersweet Court, Woodridge
November 11, 2013

At 12:42 P.M. on Monday, November 11, 2013, the Lisle Woodridge Fire District was notified by way of a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting a two story 4-unit multi-family home on fire at 13 – 16 Bittersweet, Woodridge. The first unit arrived on scene and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the rear side of the structure.

A General Alarm was dispatched at 12:44 P.M. and upgraded to a Box Alarm, sending four (4) engines, two (2) ladder trucks, two (2) medic units, and a Command Team to the scene, providing nearly twenty five (25) Lisle-Woodridge Fire District personnel. In addition, resources were also provided from several surrounding fire departments and fire districts.

The first arriving crews on the scene stretched multiple hose-lines and began extinguishment of the fire while additional personnel set up the two responding truck companies to provide ventilation. The other companies strategically placed ladders around the building, assisted with hose lines and performed search and rescue for occupants inside the homes. There were two people home at the time of the fire; they exited safely from the building.

The majority of the fire was under control approximately forty (40) minutes after the Fire District’s arrival; however due to a gas leak, the fire continued to burn until crews could coordinate an effort to secure the leak and suppress the remainder of the fire. Several Emergency Units remained on the scene until approximately 5:30 P.M. performing salvage duties and overhauling the burned areas of the structure. Power was turned off to the building and all of the units were determined to be uninhabitable.

Other departments provided coverage at Lisle-Woodridge Fire District stations that were vacated to fight the fire. There were no civilian injuries however there were two minor injuries to firefighters during this incident.

The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District fire investigation team is investigating the cause of the fire. No further information is available at the time. Additional information will be disseminated as it becomes available. If you have further questions, please contact Bureau Chief Jim French at (630) 353-3030.
