Cessna 310 with nose gear failure

Prospect Heights FPD photo

From the Prospect Heights FPD:

Call came in at 12:15 p.m.

Report was an aircraft having with trouble landing gear on nose of plane. For this, we send a Stand By assignment. The vehicles and personnel report to pre-assigned locations at the airport and wait for further information from the Air Traffic Control Tower. A standby occurs when the pilot believes there may be an emergency once a landing is attempted such as in this case of having to eventually land but perhaps with the landing gear not working as intended.

Aircraft was a Cessna 310 twin-prop with two persons onboard, pilot and passenger.

Aircraft remained in flight for more than one hour using up fuel.

While the incident began at 12:15, the aircraft did not land until almost 2:00 p.m. This was a safety precaution (to use up the fuel and ensure conditions were best possible).

Initial response was:

·       Two specialized Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, one from Prospect Heights and one from Wheeling

·       Two battalion chiefs, one from Prospect Heights and one from Wheeling

·       One ambulance

·       One engine

Once it was determined that in fact there were two persons on board and that the landing would be made without confidence in the landing gear, one additional ambulance and one tanker were requested. Both PHFPD and Wheeling fire chiefs and deputy chiefs also responded.

Due to the anticipated length of the incident, off-duty Prospect Heights and Wheeling firefighters were paged to come in and fill in their respective stations until the on-duty personnel cleared the airport.

The plane landed on runway 12/30 and came to a full stop on the runway with the nose of the aircraft unsupported as shown in the attached photo.

Neither the pilot or passenger were transported to a hospital for care.

The airport is jointly owned by the City of Prospect Heights and the Village of Wheeling. Both fire departments operate a joint response with unified command for any aircraft incident. Unlike homes or businesses, there are not streets that easily define the municipal boundaries. Many times an aircraft incident may begin in one municipality and travel into the other. For more than 20 years this joint response has worked well and produced positive results.

This from Dave Weaver:

1/20/18 GRAND DETOUR – Plane Crashes onto Frozen Rock River after Downing Power Line; Fox Lake FPD Airboat Responds to Assist Dixon Rural FPD on Interdivisional Box Alarm – Video by Dave Weaver
LIVE NEWS MONITORING:
DETAILS: At 12:36 PM on Saturday, January 20, a pilot struck a power line before crash landing onto the frozen Rock River in Grand Detour, IL near the border of Lee and Ogle counties, north of Dixon. The Dixon Rural Fire Prot. Dist., which is in MABAS Division 18 (Ogle County) requested the specialized assistance of an airboat from the Fox Lake Fire Prot. Dist. The Fox Lake FPD is in MABAS Division 4 (Lake County). The airboat crew helped ComEd workers assess the damaged power line which was entangled with the aircraft. The airboat crew also helped with the recovery of the damaged aircraft which was tugged to shore by cable. Because of the unique nature of Fox Lake’s airboat, and their crews’ familiarity with ice incidents, their specialized asset and operational skills helped bring this incident to a safe, efficient conclusion.

Still & Box + EMS Plan I at O’Hare Airport, 10-28-16

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Seven passengers and a flight attendant suffered minor injuries when an American Airlines flight bound for Miami caught fire on a runway at O’Hare International Airport as it was taking off Friday afternoon.

The pilot of Flight 383, a Boeing 767, aborted the takeoff as it rolled down runway 28R around 2:35 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The 161 passengers and nine crew members were evacuated down emergency chutes on the left side of the plane while the wing on the right side burned, according to the airline and video on the scene.

The FAA said the problem started with a blown tire, but American said  the takeoff was aborted due to an engine-related mechanical issue.

A controller radioed the plane when it suddenly came to a stop, according to a recording of the radio traffic. “American 383 … stopping on the runway,” the controller said.

“Roger, roger, fire,” the pilot radioed.

“You see any smoke or fire?” the controller asked.

“Yea, fire off the right wing.”

“OK, send out the trucks.”

A few seconds later, the pilot contacts the tower again. “Chicago, American 383, we’re evacuating.”

“American 383, roger, trucks are on the way.”

As the plane caught fire, a large rounded piece of metal smashed through the roof of a UPS facility on the airport grounds and bounced off the floor, according to an airport worker.

Runways 10L-28R, 10C-28C and 15/33 were closed after the incident.

Excerpts from NBCChicago.com:

A pilot was killed when a small plane crashed in a southwest Chicago suburb Thursday morning, burning a home in the residential area, according to authorities.

The Joliet Police Department said the plane crashed in the 1800 block of Hampton Court near Chestnut Hill Road and Bedford Drive in Plainfield around 11:15 a.m.

No one was inside the home at the time of the crash and the Federal Aviation Administration said there were no injuries on the ground. It remained unclear how many people were inside the plane, but the city manager for Joliet, said the pilot was killed.

Footage of the scene showed the house badly burned on one side with debris scattered across the street. Officials said they believe fuel from the plane sparked the fire, but an investigation remained ongoing.
