Chicago Still Alarm fire 9-14-13

This from Eric Haak:

This fire on the 5300 block of South Justine occurred Saturday afternoon at 1245 hrs.  Companies responding were Engines 116 and 123, Truck 33 and Tower Ladder 39, Battalion 19 along with Battalion 15 and Truck 18 with the RIT assignment.  No rig shots with this one as both engine companies were running spares.  There was some concern about communication to the rear porches of the exposure to the north, but everything was quickly contained.  A resident of the address told me that the mother allegedly stepped out to go to the corner store when the fire was started by kids in the rear bedroom.  During overhaul, the remnants of several mattresses were tossed out the rear window by members of Squad 5.

Long Grove rollover with entrapment 9-9-13

This from Larry Shapiro:

Long Grove firefighters were called to the scene of a tractor-trailer rollover on the ramp from northbound I53 to westbound Lake Cook Road early this afternoon. This is the site of many truck accidents annually. Arriving with Long Grove companies was Buffalo Grove Tower 25. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and needed to be extricated.

After the driver was transported to the hospital, fire units stood by for a towing and recovery company tasked with uprighting and removing the truck and trailer.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Took in the Still and Box at 2324 S. California. Fire was in a vacant 2.5-story frame, ops went defensive around the time these photos were taken. Tower 5 was moved into Sector 1 and Squad 1’s Snorkel was working with a master stream in Sector 2. Fire appeared to be in the attic/second floor. I didn’t see any flames but there was a lot of smoke. Here’s a few shots.

House fire in Chicago 8-17-13

This from Eric Haak:

The still time for this fire was 1702 hrs.  Although the fire was out before I arrived, I wanted submit these because it was kind of an interesting job.  This vacant 2.5 story frame was located in the middle of the 6900 block of south Winchester.  The block has a cul-de-sac at the south end of the block.  What was really odd was that there was a block party going on when this happened!  A couple of hundred people barbecuing and dancing with kids playing up and down the street and then this house just “randomly” catches fire and gets this advanced before any companies could arrive.  No one on the scene reported seeing anything unusual happening.  One witness just stated that one minute the home was fine and the next there was fire everywhere.  Engine 101 used their deck gun to knock it down and kept it from communicating.  I was only about 2 miles out when Engine 101 reported on scene and there wasn’t much to see once I got there.  Engine 129 and Truck 50 were the other still companies along with Truck 41.

Long Grove house fire 8-19-13

This from Larry Shapiro:

Residents called the Long Grove FD around 6:30 this morning reporting some type of explosion and fire in the garage area of their home at 3238 Victorian Lane. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 prior to the first units arriving on scene. They found all residents out of the home and heavy fire throughout the attached three-car garage and the bedroom windows above. The cedar roof shingles along that side had the roof involved as well. A quick blitz attack was initiated which then allowed companies to make an interior attack. The fire was contained to the area that was involved on arrival with slight extension further into the house.

Companies at the scene included engines from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Arlington Heights, and Wheeling. Tankers from Long Grove, Countryside, Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Barrington, and Fox Lake responded along with a Deerfield squad and Libertyville, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods ambulances.

Long Grove Engine 55 pulled into the driveway followed by Tanker 55 to supply up to 3,000 additional gallons of water before a supplemental water supply was established. Then Palatine Engine 82, the next engine to arrive, dropped a supply line down the length of the private road from a dry hydrant near Route 53. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engine 51 arrived next and established the water supply drafting from the pond.

2nd Alarm house fire in Hawthorn Woods 8-17-13

This from Larry Shapiro:

Just before 7PM, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received a report of a house fire in the 26000 block of N. Fairfield Road in Hawthorn Woods. The first engine on scene reported smoke and fire from a two-story vacant frame house. Companies were instructed to remain outside of the structure and initiate a defensive attack. A box alarm was struck and the 2nd engine laid a supply line from the long gravel driveway to the street to prepare for tanker operations. A 2nd alarm for tankers only was requested shortly thereafter and the fire was largely knocked down quickly. Companies made a search of the building but it was deemed unsafe to remain inside to fully extinguish the fire and perform overhaul.  A decision was made to standby outside as the fire grew and eventually demolished the structure.

The fire department was called to the same address less than a year ago for a fire in another vacant structure on the same property.

Four tankers responded and shuttled water to sustain hand lines used at various times throughout the 3+ hour incident. Companies on the scene included all four engines from Lake Zurich, a truck from Wauconda, engines from Palatine, Long Grove, Fox River Grove, and Palatine Rural (they were due with a tanker which is currently out of service). Tankers came from Cary, Fox Lake, Round Lake, and Nunda. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, and Libertyville had ambulances on the scene along with the MESS Canteen.

The 2nd alarm was struck out after 2 1/2 hours, although companies remained on the scene and began to extinguish the remaining fire and begin overhaul after that.

I have photos and video showing the progression of the fire which eventually involved the whole house. Here are a few images with more to follow plus the video.

Fire in Chicago 2-flat 8-10-13

This from Eric Haak:

I took in this fire about 1330 hrs Saturday afternoon in Chicago’s 23rd Battalion.  Fire was on the second floor of a vacant 25×40 2-flat in the 7200 block of South Constance.  Companies working were Engine 126 & Truck 49, Engine 72 & Tower Ladder 34, with Truck 16 and Battalion 17 being RIT.  It was hard to get any quality rig shots at this one due to the narrow streets and heavy tree cover.  The fire was knocked fairly quick but companies had quite a bit of overhaul on this one and were on scene for a little over an hour.  Engine 126 was using old Engine 56 as a spare rig.
