All emergency apparatus is outrageously expensive these days, but in this case, as some eluded to, one must consider the ancillary items that are not itemized here. Some agencies tend to pack the majority of the needed equipment and any related services into the vehicle purchase. Radios, MDTs, cardiac monitors with EXPENSIVE mounting brackets, extended warranties on the cot/cot mount, elaborate lettering/graphics package, MULTIPLE personnel traveling by air for a multi-day inspection trip can all add up rather quickly. And that list can go on and on. Today’s 21-year old FF/PM making nearly $70k/year to start also has to be educated (and/or disciplined) on how he/she impacts the longevity of the expensive apparatus he/she has been assigned to on any given day. “Is it fireman proof” shouldn’t have to be considered a tongue in cheek statement.

Lombard runs a lot of calls. They also have a replacement plan in place to replace a rig every 4-6 years and then put it into reserve for another 4-6 years then get decent money on the sale to put to the purchase of a new rig..

Mabas you bring up some valid points. The auto loader and stretcher is about 45,000.00. Over the last 15 years the cost of materials has gone up dramatically. I remember in 2004 being able to buy an ambulance for 110,000. That was a Horton E450 diesel. Today an E450 gas is double. I think you’re going to see departments finally wake up and start doing maintenance on vehicles and accepting that these ambulances are going to be around for 10-15 years. Local budgets have not gone up at the same rate as the cost of equipment and materials.

We have to remember the current situation with chip shortages and truck drivers getting paid to sit home. That’s gonna drive prices up. I just bought a brand new car and the dealer marked all of their cars up because of this.
On top of that, people can complain all they want about something being expensive but those of us who still want to work are not going to do so for nothing regardless of shortages.

It’s absolutely absurd. Just think, additional items such as radios and a MDT still need to be purchased and installed. Hopefully a Powerload system and stretcher is included.
These manufacturers are going to prevent many departments across the country from being able to afford new fire apparatus and ambulances alike. There will be many departments choosing to rechassis their current ambulances.

I can’t get over how expensive ambulances have become. I will admit, I think the Horton’s make some of the higher quality ambulances out there.
