Excerpts from Fox32Chicago.com:

A truck carrying 14,000 chickens broke down in the heat and Addison firefighters’ quick thinking saved many of the birds by hosing them down saving thousands of them. After the truck broke down along I-90, the went to a nearby mechanics shop where the chickens were cooled.

Sadly, the fire department estimates that up to 1,000 chickens did not make it. They are egg hens, so the alternative for those that did make it is not horrible.

Never the same day twice…AFPD is on the scene of a broken down semi full of chickens. The chickens are dying in the heat. Crews are using water and fans to keep them alive until they can be off loaded. #AddisonFPD
