Mara that was Truck 33’s old station. It was opened April 30th 1908 and closed on August 15 1978. The city opened a new station at 4401 S Ashland for Truck 33 and Engine 49 which was located just two blocks north in a firehouse at 1653 W 43rd Street. That station was opened on December 24th 1919 and closed August 15th 1978 when the house at 4401 S Ashland was opened. Later that year it became the headquarters of Chicago’s Emergency Preparedness and Disaster service which was Chicago’s version of a Volunteer Fire and Disaster Service. That building was torn down sometime after 2000 but they had a more interesting and detailed history then the fire house at 4459 S Marshfield.
To get a more detailed history of those stations, contact the Fire Museum of Greater Chicagoland at 5218 S Western. They have the Ken Little Library on the second floor. Before the quarantine they were only open to the public on the 4th Saturday of each month. Now they are closed to the public so write to them or call them at 877-225-7491. It is in an old fire house and staffed by volunteers.
