As seen around … Chicago

Found this in north Avondale parked on the street. The lettering that has been removed says “Jacksonville”, not sure if it’s really visible in the photo. It also appears—based on removed lettering—to have been assigned to the haz mat team before ending up here. Unsure who it belongs to or how it ended up in Avondale. Thought your readers might find it interesting.

New quint for Leyden Township (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

The Leyden Fire Protection District at 2600 Manheim Road in Franklin Park hosted an open house on October 19 to showcase the acquisition of a new Quint and a Wheeled Coach Type III ambulance to their fleet. The purchase of this equipment was made possible by a 1.5 million bond issue voted for on the March 20 primary ballot. The referendum received an overwhelming 80% support. The ten-year bond takes effect now and will increase fire district residents’ tax bill by approximately $30 per year. The new equipment replaces a 1996 truck and a 2013 ambulance, both of which have outlived their life expectancy according to Chief Kory Ryan.

The Quint gets its name from the Latin quinque, meaning five, and refers to the five functions the unit provides: a 1,500 gallon per minute pump, a 500-gallon water tank, 1200 feet of attack and supply hose, a master aerial device, and 85 feet of ground ladders. The Quint was designed to specifications set by the firefighters that include replacing roll-up doors with hinged doors, the ability to bed hose from the ground, and a 78-foot aerial ladder. The firefighters flew to Ocala, Florida to work with E-One, the leading emergency response vehicle manufacturer.

The Leyden Fire Protection District is part of MABAS Division 20 covering unincorporated Leyden, and through a mutual aid agreement with surrounding towns they also cover unincorporated Melrose Park, Franklin Park, parts of Bensenville and Northlake. The firehouse runs three 24-hour shifts with four full-time firefighters and two paramedics per shift.

Fatal crash in Milwaukee, WI – 10-24-19

Excerpts from Fox6now.com:

Three children were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near 22nd Street and Center Street Thursday evening, Oct. 24, and one died. The driver did not stop.

Police said the hit-and-run crash happened around 5:30 p.m. when a driver disregarded a red light. The crash involved a 10-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl — as well as two vehicles. Officials were not sure if the children were struck by both of the vehicles — but said both vehicles fled the scene. The 6-year-old girl died. The other two children, including the 6-year-old’s sister and cousin, were seriously hurt.

The striking vehicle was described as a 2007-2009 Saturn Aura, gray in color, with front end damage and tinted windows.

Excerpts from an earlier article at jsonline.com:

For the next two months Milwaukee police will publicize the names, booking photos, and arrest information of people convicted of and sentenced for felony reckless driving and/or fleeing an officer. The new practice of publicizing the information on the Milwaukee Police Department’s social media platforms is called the “Keep MKE’s Streets Safe” initiative.

Many of those arrested for the offenses are career criminals, and 32 arrested this year have been arrested at least twice for fleeing from police.

The announcement came after a crash that injured three people in the 3100 block of North 35th Street and followed a police pursuit.

Officers were chasing a stolen vehicle involved in an armed robbery/home invasion reported a short time earlier in the 2700 block of West State Street after the driver failed to pull over during an attempted traffic stop. The officers canceled the pursuit, but the driver continued to flee recklessly before crashing into another vehicle.

Currently, officers may chase vehicles linked to violent crimes and are allowed to pursue cars tied to drug dealing or reckless driving.

On Aug. 1, Lequon McCoy, 19, was killed when the driver of a car being chased by police that reached speeds as high as 80 mph ran a red light and struck his Jeep Renegade at North 12th and West Locust streets.

police chase April 18 in which 18-year-old Larenzo Jones was fatally injured stemmed from a shooting that wounded two girls, ages 13 and 16, and a 14-year-old boy. Jones was in the suspect vehicle.

And on June 7, 2018, Police Officer Charles Irvine Jr., 23, was killed in a rollover crash on the city’s northwest side during a pursuit of a reckless driver. His partner, Officer Matthew Schulze, who was driving, was also was injured.

Suicide in the fire service

Excerpts from 11alive.com:

More firefighters have died by suicide than in the line of duty over the past year, according to the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. The numbers are staggering. In the past seven days, eight firefighters across the United States have taken their own lives. One was in Fayette County, Georgia.

Many factors affect a firefighter’s ability to understand when a fellow brother or sister is suffering, but that does not make it any less critical an issue.

So far this year, there have been 98 suicides among firefighters and EMT’s. They estimate a 55 percent reporting.  Fayette County Fire Department Lt. Ed Sherwood’s death by suicide this week hit the community hard.  The department posted honestly about his death, highlighting how difficult it is for people in their line of work who are suffering.

According to Jeff Dill, founder of FBHA, there are five warning signs to look for (R.A.I.L.S.):

Recklessness/Impulsiveness: These might be subtle signs such as purchasing guns when a person has always been against them.

Anger: Suppressed anger or explosive anger from seemingly minor issues can be a dangerous sign.

Isolation: Becoming distant from their career company around the station or volunteer firefighters who don’t participate in drills or calls as much.

Loss of Confidence in skills and abilities: Several firefighters and EMT’s have advised FBHA they lost confidence in their ability to get the job done due to concentrating on emotional or personal issues they were battling.

Sleep Deprivation: Loss of sleep can indicate stress, anxiety, PTSD or several other emotional issues a member might be struggling with and not realize.

If you know someone or if you are thinking about suicide, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  Emergency personnel can text the word HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis. A live, trained crisis counselor receives the text and responds from a secure online platform.
