2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-24-19

This from Eric Haak:

Here is my effort from Sunday’s 2-11 on Commercial. Sunday (2/24) was an intensely windy day in the Chicago area which made for difficult firefighting conditions. The second 2-11 alarm for Chicago on this day was at 88th Street and Commercial Avenue and started in a pizza parlor that had occupied that address since the 1950’s. The fire was reported to have started in the rear of the structure and heavy winds blowing across from the west quickly escalated the incident. Most of my images were taken from the B/C corner. Kind of a cool image of the new and old tower ladder baskets working side by side. Hope you enjoy.

Park Ridge Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Park Ridge Fire Department responded to 5,187 calls in 2018 — a new record. They responded to 370 more calls last year than in 2017. According to the fire department’s 2018 annual report, of the 5,187 total calls, 3,156 of them were for EMS services. Health care facilities count for about 13 percent of the department’s annual ambulance calls which have been steadily increasing for years. Two additional firefighter/paramedic positions were added in late 2017 to help address the rising number of calls. Contributing to the increase in calls for patient transports to the hospital is the number of nursing and senior facilities in Park Ridge.

The fire department has met with Advocate Lutheran General Hospital officials to map out the types of calls that warrant a response from paramedics and those that can — and should — be addressed by hospital staff. Emergencies within some buildings on the campus can be handled by hospital staff. Incidents that occur outside, however, may require an ambulance to respond because the hospital may not have the appropriate equipment to get the individual to the emergency room.

Through talks with the hospital, EMS calls to the campus fell by half during some months last year, but call volume overall did not decrease due to things like alarms or issues related to construction projects. Hospital staff is working with the fire department to reduce the use of department resources.

2-Alarm fire in Hillside, 2-24-19

This from Eric Haak:

The Hillside Fire Department had a second alarm on Sunday morning at about 4:45am. The fire was in a 25×100 commercial building that had 1-story in the front and 2-stories in the back. I was unable to get to the front of the building so here is are images of Schiller Park’s truck and a Villa Park engine working in sector C.

2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-24-19

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

2-24-19

Ambulance 77 reported smoke from the roof of a 3-sty building Sunday afternoon at 1838 S. St. Louis. The MFAO filled it out and gave the 14th Battalion a working fire right away. Engine 38 arrived and had heavy fire showing from a 3-sty brick, three-flat in the rear, extending to the exposure to the south. Battalion 14 boxed it shortly after his arrival. Chicago was experiencing very high winds gusting upwards of 50MPH. After trying to make the 3rd floor, the chief pulled all companies out of the building to regroup. Multiple handlines were dropped from 38 and 109. I believe that the 2-11 was requested for manpower.

Oak Forest Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Oak Forest City Council voted to raise the rate for part-time firefighters and paramedics from $13 per shift hour to $20, which Fire Chief Patrick Duffy said is the same as what neighboring Midlothian and nearby Homewood pay, and is similar to rates offered in Country Club Hills ($19 per shift hour) and Flossmoor ($21).

Oak Forest has used part-time firefighters to supplement their staff since 2009. The department has had trouble attracting sufficient numbers of part-time people to work, and has had to use career staff to fill shifts that were intended for part-time firefighters, which winds up costing the city more money.

Boosting the part-time pay rate may help the Oak Forest find more people to fill the slots – which involve having people work 12-hour shifts at a time. Currently, the department has seven people working part-time slots. Oak Forest is likely to undertake a new effort via social media to recruit people for the part-time slots they wish to fill.

The fire department has problems retaining part-time firefighters because the qualifications for the job are the same as that of full-time firefighters, which means that other cities often hire away part-timers for full-time jobs when they have vacancies. During the past 90 days, Oak Forest several part-timers have quit to take jobs elsewhere.

thanks Dennis
