Aurora Fire Department news

Excerpts from cbschicago.com:

An 11-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon after his friends lost sight of him in the Fox River in Aurora.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Connor Lasley was playing in the river with two friends near the 400 block of North River Street when he journeyed out into deeper water according to a statement from the Aurora Fire Department.

“The other two noticed that he was struggling and were unable to get to him because they did not know how to swim.” They called 911 when they lost sight of him.

Twenty firefighters and divers searched for Connor for 49 minutes and found him about 50 feet from shore. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The boy lived in Aurora.

“While the water levels have receded, the Fox River still presents risks,” the statement said. “These risks include drop-offs, current and debris, which can present a challenge to any swimmer regardless of skill level and experience.”

Rockford Fire Department news

Excerpts from rrstar.com:

A Rockford firefighter was injured, but not seriously, when he fell through a floor while battling a structure fire last week.

The firefighter, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital where he was treated for injuries to his ribs and shoulder and released.

“No broken bones, just banged and bruised up,” Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten said. “He’s at home with his family.”

The Rockford Fire Department was called to 1223 15th Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. for a fire at a vacant two-family building. Firefighters found flames coming from the back of the building when they arrived and knocked down the main body of the fire within minutes.

The firefighter fell while trying to advance into the interior to get to the hot spots. He was heading up to the second floor when he fell through to the first, Bergsten said. Bergsten said it’s been about five years since the last firefighter injury of this nature.

Vintage 4-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 9-9-82

This from Steve Redick:

I opened the archives again. This fire was in a 4-11 in a huge, u-shaped apartment building at 3348 N. Central 9/9/82.

Some voices: call taker FAO George Mazurek; Kenny Little dispatching the units, and those with sharp ears will recognize Roger Thompson later in the incident.

I took this in and have a few images, some are a little iffy in terms of quality but worth a look. They brought the turret wagon into the courtyard but as I recall they didn’t use it. This was a tough and nasty job.
