I think the main reason why they decided to build the training facility in such a crazy neighborhood is that the land is simply cheaper there. The “stabilization” of the neighborhood would never be the main reason, nobody can tell if it’s gonna work in such a desolated neighborhood anyway..

I’m sensing some discontent with the recent decisions by the mayor of Chicago. Yes rough neighborhoods but consider the thought that those facilities might bring control to those areas. I don’t believe that everyone living there is bad. I’m sure that there’s families praying for help some law and order to their neighborhood. The only downside is that the violence will spill out into other somewhat stable areas and that is what the Cpd should concentrate on. Plus these facilities will need to be maintained so they will also bring some jobs plus stability. I feel your anger I have worked most of my life in the inner city and even with problems there are good people looking for help so let’s hope and pray that this will be a good thing for those areas. Just a thought. John

100% spot on Bill. Hypocritical city govt and mayor’s. Nothing new for Chiraq.

Great points Bill. Every medium to large city seems to have groups that want the rest of us to be kind to the criminal puke and give them a chance with compassion. But I never see these do gooders take them into their homes but rather they advocate to release them and let them ruin once great parts of the city.

Well the policemen and firemen won’t have far to go for the action. Last year Garfield Park was the third deadliest neighborhood in the city with 384 shootings which included 58 people killed and 326 wounded. The new Police and Fire Academy is also 5 blocks east of the Austin neighborhood which was number one in gunshot victims with 537 people shot including 92 dead and 445 wounded.
And the new Fleet Management garage and offices will be built in the Englewood shooting gallery which was the 2nd deadliest neighborhood with 441 people shot of which 85 were killed and 356 wounded.
Notice how city hall is all for moving the vehicle repair facilities and the new police and fire training facilities into the worst neighborhoods.
While city hall is moving those facilities into the Garfield Park and Englewood shooting galleries, why not move city hall into the Austin shooting gallery. Chicago could probably make more money letting a developer tear down city hall and replacing it with a high-rise office building and hotel. After all if it’s good enough for firefighters it should be good enough for the mayor and aldermen to be relocated into one of Chicago’s fantastic shooting galleries (or is it neighborhoods?) on the South or the West sides.

So they have to share with PD. That’s fairly common and for the most part, it works just fine but I guess some children can’t get along with each other.
Looking a map, there are streets that lead to it so how is public transportation even a factor here if most people that will train or work there drive their own cars anyway?

Nothing is ever jointly shared Harry. (Military experience being applied here.) There is always a dominant partner and logic tells me it will be CPD. Time will tell. The mayor can show off a new PD training facility and convince the gullible media that it will somehow lower the murder rate. That same mayor could tell the media that the CFD will use the Garfield Park field house until their facilities are ready and no one will bat an eye. Hope I’m wrong. Not cynical, just a Chicagoan.

No easy way to get there and not readily accessible to public transportation. Great location selection! It will be interesting to see how much the city sells the land of the current academies for.

mike mc why do u think pd will just take 30 acres of land is bg enough for pd and fd to share

From the looks this will have significant impact on the CFD. Several different style training tower areas etc. The field operation areas will likely be a mix usage in several spots. The classrooms indoor space may be close to 50/50 with the new virtual ability in the classrooms etc for the PD.
No sense in getting all worked up until it is actually built and even then, it doesn’t effect 99% (just a guess) of us here.

I can see the police getting the lion’s share of virtually everything: acreage, buildings, construction priorities, parking, operating budget, you name it. Don’t be surprised if the CFD is still using DeKoven Street years after CPD is operating at the new facility.

Should be a neat facility. I can envision some impressive musters given the added space.
