North Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from theyoujournal.com:

North Chicago Fire Department personnel delivered donations including care packages for young patients and their families to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

A fundraiser for the patient gifts was organized after a member of the fire department experienced, firsthand, how the services provided by the hospital staff changed the lives of so many children.

“I am amazed by the Lurie Children’s Hospital staff, their knowledge, professionalism and moreover how they work each and every day bearing witness to these critically ill children,” said North Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Kim Schaefer.

North Chicago Fire Chief Dell Urban was more than pleased with the generosity her staff displayed.

Forest Park Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ForestParkReview.com:

The Forest Park Fire Department will purchase of a new fire engine and an ambulance thanks to a grant from the federal government and action taken by the village council.

The fire engine will cost $450,000, with $428,572, or 95 percent covered by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Program grant. The village will pay the remaining 5 percent, $21,428.00. This will replace a 1993 engine used as a reserve.

To facilitate purchase of the engine, the village also entered into an inter-local for cooperative purchasing contract with the Houston-Galveston Area Council. Gillian explained the contract fulfills terms of the agreement for the grant, which he said village officials have been pursuing for years.

Officials are still working on specifications and manufacturers but hope to place the order for the engine by the end of September. They will purchase the engine from a company that produces all components rather than the chassis from one company and the body from another.

The ambulance, a Road Rescue demonstrator, is $154,000 and will replace a 2005 model that will be traded in.  Funding for a new ambulance has been budgeted in each of the previous four years, but the money was needed elsewhere. The fire department hopes to accept delivery in early October.

The new vehicles join a 2003 truck and a 2007 engine in the department’s fleet.

To help finance the purchases, the village council voted Monday to establish a 10-year $750,000 line of credit with Forest Park National Bank. Gillian explained the line of credit will be used to finance the initial equipment and vehicle purchases. After the final purchases are made, the village will refinance with loans, 10-year loans for what he called the “big-ticket items” and five-year loans for the lower-cost purchases.

Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, 9-12-16 (more)

This from Steve Redick:

The parade of dollar store fires continues. This occurred on September 12, at Jackson & Kedzie. The construction was described as light weight, and I believe this same mall was burned several years ago as well. Access was somewhat difficult as this was right by a major CTA bus barn and the Eisenhower Expressway causing a real traffic snarl. At the height of the fire TL 5, TL14, Squad 2, Eng 44’s deck gun, 661, the turret wagon and the hose wagon were all in use.
Squad 2’s Snorkel was enveloped in a fireball when a portion of the roof collapsed and the members were injured although I believe in minor fashion. The rig became dead in the water. They used the winch from the pie-wagon piece of Squad 2 to try to pull the Snorkel away from the building … an interesting operation to watch. The photo of the reserve Snorkel and the new TL 14 depicts the oldest and newest rigs in the fleet working together … kinda neat. All of the images and the video can be viewed here.
